The Weyr had been planning for this. Or, at least, parts of the Weyr had - Eloise and Chiroth, the Candidate Masters, and especially the Candidates. The excitement had grown even more when it was announced that yes, they would get to see Chiroth’s eggs. Yes, it would be soon. Lessons had been given and re-enforced about appropriate behavior on the sands. No running. No rough housing. If either the egg or Chiroth herself didn’t want you to touch it, you were to respect that. Rules and boundaries that were set so precisely every hatching, to the point those candidates who had been part of Sirocco for a bit could probably recite them word for word. What broke that familiar routine, however, was a stern warning about bringing non-candidates (or worse, non-weyrfolk) onto the Sands. Chiroth was not of the temper to suffer any trespassers, and watch dragons had been posted to make sure she and her eggs were left in peace. Any candidates caught attempting shenanigans would suffer harsh consequences.

By the time the day of the Touching rolled around even the new candidates could recite the rules from memory. That didn’t stop the buzz of excitement through the barracks though, and even the candidate masters seemed to be infected by it. After all, they understood too well the excitement of meeting the eggs for the first time.

The Candidate masters gathered the candidates up, escorting them to the mouth of the Hatching Sands, only to stop and go over the rules once more. The posted watch dragons could be seen from the ledges, peering in with curiosity at the Candidates.

Now the fun could begin.

Touching Rules

- All candidates are welcome to attend this event. You still have time to make a candidate & send in your Pre-Touching Candidate Form and join!

- Following the Touching you MUST* submit a post touching form or your candidate may not Impress. *(Stands Impressions are an exception)

- When interacting with an egg please BOLD the egg name at least once in your post.

- Your candidate may touch the same egg more than once. REMEMBER: Writers should consider any of the eggs to be potentially available to their character(s). Candidates should therefore take special consideration to which eggs they approach, as they may form a lasting bond that ultimately leads to Impression.

- If you and/ or your candidate are looking for guidance, they may approach Chiroth for advice. As Chiroth is an NPC your answer will be simple but will point you in the right direction! - There is currently no maximum number of eggs a candidate can interact with, but priority will be given to those that have touched less than most. It is assumed that IC candidates are able to interact with most of the eggs over the course of a sevenday. You may assume that your characters & the eggs have taken rests!

- Remember IC actions = IC consequences. Candidates may interact with one another on the sands but remember to keep your voices respectful.

- The touching will run [02/11/2018-02/23/2018] OOC

Here it was, one of the days they had all been waiting for. She would be lying to herself if she didn't admit that she was equally as excited. A touch dreadful as well, seeing as this clutch could very well put an end to her dreams of becoming apprentice headwoman. But she was also excited because she very well could Impress this time around. And hatchlings were always something to be excited about, personal agendas aside.

She took a deep breath and released it, clearing her mind. Now was not the time to have clouded judgement. Her run-in with the green at the last hatching had taught her that. And so, she told herself to focus on the here and now.

Once she stepped on the sands, she gave Chiroth a deep bow. "Thank you, clutchmother, for the gift of your children and allowing us to approach them," she told the gold properly, her training as the Weyrwoman's daughter coming into play. She waited a moment, then moved through the sands gingerly, scanning the eggs.

Perhaps it was no surprise when she approached the Conflicted egg. It was golden, and if her mother was to be believed, she was destined for gold, so why not start off on the right foot? She knelt down before it and contemplated touching the slippery looking surface before just going for it. Once her hand told her that it was, truly, a normal egg shell, she leaned forward slightly.

"Hello in there, dear one," she called softly to it. "It must be lonely out here by yourself."

Ceony stepped onto the sands with baited breath. The last hatching she had stood for had been at Ista, and she had failed to Impress there. Would she suffer the same fate here? Ceony could not begin to guess, but she was eager to meet these eggs.

She wished she had Bitsy with her, but she had heard that Chiroth was feeling temperamental lately, and she thought it best to leave the boisterous blue behind. Still, he was her security blanket, and she felt more confident with him around.

The sands were hot even through the soles of her heavy boots, and she shifted from foot to foot as she bowed first to Eloise and then to Chiroth, murmuring, "My duty to you both," before she began to wander about the eggs.

Observing them first seemed like a good idea, and she peered at each shell carefully. Ceony wasn't sure where to start, at first. It was a little overwhelming to look at them all, though it wasn't the largest clutch she had ever seen.

Perhaps it was just that this was feeling all new to her again.

Ceony didn't know, and maybe it wasn't the best idea to focus on it, or on how nervous she was feeling. The hatchlings would surely pick up on that.

In the end, Ceony couldn't decide which egg to speak to first, so she made her way back to Chiroth, bowing low before her. "Hello, Chiroth. I would truly appreciate it if you could offer me a little guidance. Which egg do you think I should speak to first?"

Eggs!

This would be the fourth clutch he met and in a way didn't that make him luckier than people who Impressed first time? He got to meet loads more little forming dragon minds, an experience like nothing else on Pern.

As they entered the Sands Lorux forced himself to stand still and bow properly instead of bouncing on the balls of his feet with excitement as he wanted to; much as he'd just thought he was lucky to have met so many eggs he was really, really ready to meet his own dragon now. True there were only twelve eggs so his odds maybe weren't so great as they had been for Rikeleth's, more than twice the size, but if his dragon was here then they were here and it didn't matter how many other candidates were around.

Once proper respects were paid Lorux spent a few moments just admiring the bright lovely shells, thinking back to Rikeleth's clutch to try to compare their sizes - looked like a sort of similar spread to him.

By now it felt like routine to approach the gold mother first instead of her eggs, and so Lorux walked over to Chiroth and gave another little bow. "Your eggs are just as lovely as your last clutch Chiroth! Could you tell me which ones I should meet first please?"

Like all the other times he had listened to the candidatemasters and their seemingly endless list of rules and advice, Mortierion stood on the hatching sands looking out at the eggs. They were always a marvel, dragon eggs. Pretty and unique each one, just like the little one growing inside. He didn't dare get his hopes up though. He had stopped counting how many hatchings he had stood for long ago.

He wanted all of the other candidates to go and touch the louder eggs. He very rarely liked loud eggs, which was probably why he hadn't impressed yet. He was too dull and not strong enough to handle a fiesty dragon. Maybe he would age out and go back to leatherworking? Or, better yet, since Sirocco was so welcoming, he could go work in the Creche with his mother and help raise other weyrbrats like himself. Maybe he would be able to make a difference finally, since he couldn't seem to do anything now.

Gaining his courage, Morti walked toward the eggs. He was intimidated by Chiroth, and unless the eggs he liked the look of right away didn't try to eat his mind from the inside out, he would be just fine finding his own way. Walking right up to the Falling Egg Mortieron paused. It looked as if it wanted to be left alone, to go unnoticed, forgotten. He knew what that was like.

Crouching down Morti pressed his hand against the cold hard shell and shivered at the surprise. He had expected it to be warm, but he did not pull away.

"Greetings," He said by way of hello and opened his mind to the egg.

Twelve eggs was not terribly many but she'd heard it rumoured that a gold was expected, and if that was so it was more than worth the gamble of her future.

Arria entered the sands in a swish of fine cotton and bowed low to the nesting queen though through the gesture she looked up at the gold from under brightly painted eyelids. Chiroth, Iridith's first gold daughter, and seemingly no better at producing eggs than her sickly mother. It was a shame for Sirocco, but if she could entice a golden daughter of this one to her side all would be forgiven.

"Chiroth, thank you for this honour."

And then as she was a badly-well-born woman she turned and confidently approached the gleaming Conflicted Egg. The shell under her hand felt strangely slick, she hadn't expected that, but she recovered quickly from the surprise and tried to reach out her mind to it or at least open herself; curiosity, excitement, reaching out in search of fun.

Mae nearly held her breath as she joined the other candidates to crowd the Sands. Though it was her second time attending a Touching, it wasn't any less exciting as it had been the first time. And that kind of surprised her. She had somewhat expected the rejection of the last Hatching to taint this clutch, but that didn't seem to be the case. Which made since why some candidates stood for many turns without breaking.

She would not be one of them.

This was her clutch, she was sure of it her dragon was here, within one of these eggs. Sure as her brother rode brown, her dragon was among these hatchling. She waited impatiently as the rules were gone over once again. As if they didn't all have them memorized already! And then they were allowed to mingle with the eggs!

Mae made sure to give Chiroth a proper bow and greeting, and then proceeded to wander among the clutch. She walked gingerly, but with a purpose. There was so much emotion among these hatchling and she wasn't quite sure where to begin. She knew some of her fellow candidates were asking the clutchmother for advice, but she'd never been one to do such a thing. Instead, she took a deep breath and let her vision in focus.

When she brought herself back to the here and now, one egg stood out to her, and that was the one she made her way towards. Perhaps it was the coloring, or maybe just the size of the egg, but either way, the Windswept egg called to her, and she listened. Eagerly, she placed her hands on the shell, almost desiring for the egg to actually be as soft as she thought it would be.

"Hello in there!" She called quite loudly to the hatchling within.

Sarine
The instant Sarine’s fingers touched the Conflicted Egg’s shell, the presence within was on her. It wrapped itself around her mind, clinging tightly, as if it expected at any moment to be told to let go. When no orders to leave came the presence within Conflicted began to rustle through Sarine’s mind, looking at all of the bits and pieces it could find. A few moments of silence passed as Conflicted rifled through Sarine’s thoughts and memories. When the candidate’s words finally registered with the egg it seemed to pause in surprise. Defiance shot through the mind wrapped around Sarine’s. Lonely? I’m not lonely. The mind paused again and retreated a bit, the almost suffocating feel of something clinging fading slightly as it considered Sarine. Are you lonely?

Ceony
Chiroth suggests that Ceony visit the Falling, Conflicted, and Friendly eggs.

Lorux
Chiroth suggests that Lorux visit the Dreamer, Friendly, Balance, and Hidden eggs.

Mortieron
For just a moment - but oh, how that moment seemed to stretch - there was nothing there. No response, no feeling of a presence. It was so easy to see why people claimed this egg was a dud. But it truly was just a moment, just the span of a breath, and then something...appeared. Mortieron would feel as if there was something in that darkness, something watching him intently. That feeling was the only impression that someone was home in the egg. At least, until it finally, finally reached out. It pulled the boy deeper within, the feeling like being plunged into a frozen snowbank. The presence within the egg pulled away again, into the shadowy recesses. But the eyes were still there, watching. It likely wasn’t intended to be unsettling, but it was easy to see how it would be. Silence reigned as Falling waited for a reaction.

Arria
The presence within the Conflicted egg wasted no time in slamming itself against Arria’s mind, burrowing in and clinging as if it intended to never leave. There were no words from this candidate, nothing for Conflicted’s mind to wrap around and ask about. Instead there was only silence and a want of...fun? Curiosity and excitement were there too. The egg understood what they were as concepts, of course, but it had never been confronted with those feelings. Who are you? it finally demanded, that smothering presence loosening its hold on Arria’s mind. Wariness crept in and pressed on Arria’s mind, lending the air that the egg perhaps did not trust her silence.

Maelia
Almost as soon as Maelia touched the unfortunately firm shell of Windswept, a playful wind kicked up, swirling and playing around the candidate’s mind. Powerful enough to push, one would be forgiven for thinking that it was real, and not just the personality within pulling her further in, bringing her closer to study. The presence seemed to think nothing of going through Maelia’s mind. Hello! Did you come to play? You aren’t so scared to just jump in, are you?

"Thank you, Chiroth," Ceony murmured, bowing again. Then she turned back to the eggs, meandering through them till she came upon the Falling egg. She stopped before it. It was nondescript and plain at first glance, but Ceony leaned closer to it.

Dull and grey though it might appear, when she got a better look at it, she noticed the flecks of white and the slight sheen. It was a pretty egg, and it brought to mind snow. Or, at least what Ceony envisioned as being snow--she had never seen it before in person.

She laid her hand upon its shell and nearly gasped. It was cold, though not as cold as between. Maybe it really was like snow!

A frown marred her brow. Are you all right in there? she asked it, a hint of concern in her words. She tried to make her mind as warm and welcoming as she could. It was nice to have had practice with Bitsy, and with past touchings. But she hadn't ever touched a shell that was so chilled through. She hoped the little dragon was okay.

I'm Ceony, she said, curling her fingers against the shell. After a moment, she did feel the presence inside, stronger than one might expect for something so cold. That made her smile, and she pressed her mind closer. I'm very glad to meet you. Would you like to chat a bit?

It spoke!

Arria drew in a sharp breath, shocked and delighted by the revelation; candidates who'd stood before said that the eggs spoke to you but she hadn't expected words. She hadn't expected the strength of its response at all in fact, if she was quite honest with herself - and with the egg, of course.

Hello, she replied, running her dark hands and eyes over the shell of the Conflicted egg in wonder. I am Arria, born of Bitra, seeking my partner. Who are you? Were all the eggs so strong as this one? So well formed?

Lorux thanked Chiroth for her advice and then turned back to the clutch, and it was obvious where he was going first! An egg that'd already earned the name friendly was definitely one he wanted to meet.

Heart skipping in his chest with excitement and hope Lorux approached the golden egg - he knew by now that its colour didn't really mean anything - and pressed a palm to the shell. Hello! I'm Lorux, pleased to meet you!

Ceony
So… it reminded her of snow? There was a sudden tug, the feel of being pulled into a deep snowdrift. Would she know the feeling? The feeling of nothing but cold surrounding her, nothing to pull her free. The presence within was like a caged feline, prowling. She was worried… about it? The presence within Falling went through her mind, not gentle but not overly pushy either. Not yet. You care? The voice sounded doubtful. Why? And yet, Falling could see it. She wasn’t a liar. You don’t know me. Why care for those you do not know? How do you know they are worthy of such?

Arria
Who was it? Well that was an odd question, and the Conflicted egg wasn’t sure how to answer it. I’m an egg! it said finally, its voice full of fire and defiance, as if it expected its visitor to say it was wrong. Arria’s delight was enough to draw the presence back to her, though, the wariness fading slightly. I guess I’m looking for my partner too, it said, all of the fire and defiance in its place being replaced by something that might have been shyness. Conflicted wrapped its mind a little tighter around Arria’s and resumed its digging. Could she possibly be the partner it needed? Looking for a partner is a big risk. Is that why you’re doing it? Because it’s a risk? Conflicted asked, its voice veering towards suspicious again.

Lorux
The Friendly Egg wasn’t the type to wait, not like some of it’s siblings, nor test like others. The second Lorux’s hand rested upon the smooth golden shell a burst of light and energy arced across his mind, as quickly and brightly as fireworks exploding in the sky. That feeling of brightness and joy made the presence within the egg seem larger than life. Hello!!! Lorux, huh? Lor it is then! Hm, too impersonal? Well, Lor, the pleasure is all mine! The speed with which Friendly went through Lorux’s mind was almost dizzying but it was also careful, as if the egg didn’t want to offend the candidate. Lucky… lucky is right! You’re very lucky, and kind. The others you think about are lucky to have you! A burst of energy, of fun. Everyone needs that, don’t you think?

She paused. No one had asked her that question before. Was she lonely? She didn't think so. She had her family, and while they weren't as close-knit as some other families, due to both of her parents being dragonriders, but they certainly weren't lacking in socializing with one another.

"I don't think I am? I'm close to my family and have a good number of friends. I guess I do tend to alienate myself at times, but not enough that it's ever bothered me," she admitted to the egg.

She took a moment to consider her next words carefully. She didn't want to offend the hatchling in the egg, not this early in the game. Or ever, honestly.

"I'm glad you're not lonely. I simply thought you might be, due to your egg's position," she told Conflicted. "It was foolish of me to assume. If you're not lonely, how are you feeling? Excited to meet everyone today?"

Ceony gasped, a shudder working its way through her. Well, it was certainly what she imagined snow would feel like, the cold surrounding her and leaving her breathless. She kept her hand steady on Falling's shell though, and thought of Ista's warm sandy beaches to steady herself.

It's what I've heard about snow, she agreed. I admit that I haven't seen it in person myself. But I've been between, and it's not as cold as that. She shifted from foot to foot as the hot sands penetrated the thick soles of her boots. How strange it felt, such conflicting temperatures.

The eggs question surprised her. Why would I not be worried? she asked. Ceony adored dragons, and even if they were not for her--she did not wish any of them ill. She gave Falling's question some thought before she continued.

Everyone deserves to have someone care about them,Ceony said. Worthiness did not factor into it, for Ceony. She cared effortlessly for things, and sometimes she care too much. She stroked the shell lightly. And you'll bring much to the world when you break shell someday, she added.

As this was Miradena's first clutch as a candidate there was an abundance of nerves as she stepped onto the sands. Sure she had watched hatchings from the stands but never had she been this close to the eggs themselves or the gold that watched over them. It was rare to see a gold in the infirmary so her contact with the color was limited. That did not however mean that her respect for the creature was less. The warnings about bringing those that didn't belong fell not on deaf ears but on one's that were unsure about why those particular words were needed. One thing that set her apart from the others here was the arrival after the last hatching and it's unexpected dramas.

Emerald gaze passed over the eggs standing under protective watch before her though they would wait but a few moments more. No she had to show that the mother's choice ruled all here first. With that in mind she made her way to the awaiting gold. She knew she wasn't the first to do so and would not be the first with hands touching the shells before them either. That wasn't important though. She intended to test her own mettle and interact with all that would have her here, so the words she gave to Chiroth were not those seeking guidance, not yet at least.

"Honored Chiroth, thank you for letting us visit with you and your children."

It was with caution that she walked among the eggs along with a heightened sense of excitement. Gentle steps, as to disturb the sands no more than absolutely necessary led first to the Dreamer Egg. She would get to the two golden in hue but they had others paying them mind right now.

Mind open as well as it could be she knelt down. Slowly she brought a hand up to touch the oh so fragile shell, letting it fall in a firm though light caress, unknowing what to expect next.

Well, here she went again. The touching was always her favorite part of any clutch - the eggs had always been so friendly and kind to her every time - but that didn't make it any less stressful. A gold could be in one of the eggs, she knew her mother hoped one was, and she knew her mother hoped it would come to her.

Not that one would, of course. Why would it?

Pushing such thoughts out of her mind for the moment and doing her best not to wish she had her firelizards to keep her company and soothe her frazzled nerves, Lilimina bowed low to Chiroth and murmured a polite greeting and thanks for the honor of meeting her beautiful eggs. Beautiful they were, even though one looked as if a child had drawn on it and another seemed to sport a bright red bow. ...a child hadn't actually drawn on it, had they? No, surely not. ...probably not.

Anyway.

With her respects to Chiroth paid, Lilimina turned and walked towards a few of the eggs in particular, chewing her lower lip a little as she considered them. Her mother had made it perfectly clear she should greet the eggs most likely to contain a gold first and foremost, and so Lili wavered between the two largest gold eggs, Conflicted and Friendly. Which first though...? Well, the larger of the two seemed more likely to contain a gold, so Lili turned to carefully kneel down beside the Conflicted egg, doing her best to ignore the hot sands beneath her. Hello there, she greeted it hesitantly as she gently laid her palm over its slippery-looking surface and opened her mind to it. Why was it isolated so? My name is Lilimina. Would you mind if I spoke to you for a little while?

A strange question? Arria chuckled slightly and shook her head; You asked me first my dear, why should I not ask you the same? Perhaps it had different expectations of itself than it did of her, after all it was a dragon and an unborn one at that. I have never experienced anything like meeting you before, and I like to think that I have experienced much in my twenty turns. A strange warmth bloomed in her chest as she thought this and she rubbed little circles on the shell with her fingertips. What a wonderful, brave little thing you are. It had been so full of defiance for a few moments there, a dragon like that could take on all of Pern, but the shyness that followed hinted that it needed a partner to do it with. Well, didn't everyone do better when they had somebody they trusted implicitly by their side?

Why though? Conflicted asked a fair question.

A risk, yes. A chance? A chance to be somebody, perhaps. Shall I tell you the story my dear? I hope not to bore you, Arria thought, her mind wry and her lips smiling. I need a place in life. Until now I have had one by my mother's side, growing as her daughter, and that has been wonderful. Now that I am twenty however I need my own life, and my own path. My sister will inherit our mother's place and so I must seek my own. Why not in the sky? She had imagined a gold when she accepted the Search and she did not hide that from Conflicted, but she also let it feel the way that her mind had opened in the scant days since then. A woman here many do anything she wills, be she a rider or otherwise. Sirocco is my risk. Sirocco is my chance, I think. If she Impressed a gold she would become a Weyrwoman by the very nature of her dragon, if she Impressed any other colour they would forge their future together and the possibilities for it were many and varied.

And what do you want out of life my dear? Do you know?

The grin on Mae's face widened as the voice spoke to her from the egg, and she had to work hard to restrain herself from hugging the egg. The young one inside sounded just like someone she'd willingly seek out as a friend.

"I'm always ready for adventure," she told Windswept, her voice slightly quieter than before. "It's all or nothing, and I see no reason not to throw myself into things fully. As for playing with you, yes of course! I've come to play, if that's what you want." She wasn't quite certain how she was going to play with an egg, but she was up for the challenge!

Sarine
Hm. She had apologized. The presence within the Conflicted egg relaxed a little bit, though its hold on Sarine’s mind did not slacken at all. Apology accepted, it said, though the presence still sounded wounded that she would think it was lonely. Not wanting Sarine to think it was a weak egg - no, it was a brave, strong egg who didn’t need to dwell on things - it moved on, having found something much more interesting in Sarine’s words and in her mind. You alienate yourself but you like to be nosy, Conflicted said, confusion rippling through its voice. Why would you alienate yourself if you like other people?

Ceony
The presence within the egg fell silent. It could feel the truth in her words, and it wasn’t sure how to feel about that. What had it ever done to deserve this sort of consideration? It was a presence, a thought wrapped in darkness wrapped in a shell. But her consideration seemed to earn some softness from Falling. Its presence wrapped around her, like a thick blanket on a cold day. No longer was she covered in cold. Instead it was a comforting warmth, like the presence within was attempting to shield her from its own chill. Not everything brings good. It responded. A pause, no longer than a blink. But thank you. Falling could be felt going through her mind, thorough, and even gentle as it did so. Are you frightened? To bond with any of us means much conflict. There will be strife and pain. You will not be safe with your books and gentle kindness. Do you think there is a place for such things in this fight?

Miradena
There was no hesitation from the inhabitant as Miradena placed her hand on the shell of the Dreamer Egg. Its mind whirled up, enveloping the candidate’s mind and tugging it along. The feeling was akin to that of being welcomed into a home and settled down into the most comfortable chair. Hello there, Dreamer said pleasantly. The presence seemed to step back, as if it were settling into a chair across from its guest. What can I do for you?

Lilimina
Oh, another visitor! Conflicted was almost beside itself with glee that it was getting so much attention. The presence within the egg wound itself tightly around Lilimina’s mind, squeezing through any of the cracks it could find. No, I don’t! it said eagerly. Conflicted rifled through Lilimina’s mind hoping to find something and found...confusion. The egg hesitated and pulled back from Lilimina bit, suddenly wary. Its other visitors had come with certainty of self and their own expectations. This guest did not have that. Who are you? it asked, its confusion quite evident. Do you know?

Arria
She had called it brave. Conflicted wanted to be brave, it wanted to be the bravest egg on Pern. The presence inside sat quietly as Arria told her story, but that silence was not empty. It was clear that Conflicted was listening attentively, that it was taking in what Arria was saying to it. What a wonderful, brave thing you are, it echoed, and it meant it. Conflicted knew what Arria meant - it too wanted to find its own way in the world, to find its own place. I want to be the best. Conflicted’s voice flared up again, but with passion instead of defiance. Do you know what it’s like in the sky? it asked. She had mentioned that her place would be there. Conflicted instinctively knew that its place was in the sky as well, but it had never been there. How can you know a place is yours if you’ve never been?

Maelia
The wind that made up Windswept’s mind swirled around Maelia, carrying the sound of distant laughter in its wake. Apparently it was pleased with her answers. You can hug me if you want! I don’t think the ones watching you would like it, but what do they know? Windswept responded. The ones watching over the event seemed, from Maelia’s mind, rather stern. It knew that its own golden mother would brook no shenanigans, even though Windswept was of the opinion that some shenanigans would be fun! It’s good, I think, to not be afraid. There’s so much to see, to experience. There will be much adventure, and danger. Can you be unafraid in the face of that?

Oh of course darling, here let me- Arria's brow wrinkled just a little as she tried to conjure up the feeling of flight for Conflicted. The way the wind rushed by you, how your stomach dropped with an exhilarating rush in a sudden dive, and the way the world looked so small laid out below you. I think it must be even better to fly with your own wings, she added as she allowed the images and sensations to fade.

I try to be brave darling, though I can't say I've ever really found anything to be brave against. Her life had been very easy in very many ways, and she was full aware of it. Oh she'd needed to manage her reputation in the high circles of society but that had never been hard as such, probably thanks to the love of her parents. I hope that I would be, if I were pressed. She had come out on top of many a social spat, she didn't count fighting such a battle as true bravery but she didn't discount it completely either; she knew she had grit and great willpower but she would be a fool to state that she knew she would easily overcome every challenge the world might throw at her.

The latest question from Conflicted however made Arria smile.

Simple darling; any place I exist in is my place. Let your personality fill the room, the hold, the sky itself. I consider myself adaptable; your place will be the sky by your nature, but you have many options within and beyond that you know. Believe in yourself as I do in myself and I am sure you will lead a happy life.

Lor is good! Lorux grinned as the bright feeling from the egg filled his mind, how could anyone not? I hope I make the people around me happy, he continued, firm and trying for serious - because he was serious about it - but honestly still grinning at the feelings from Friendly. There's lots of people that need it yeah? The little people, people who don't get any choices in life 'cept who they spend their off hours with. They need fun like you got, they need excitement - chances! His first impression of Friendly was amazing but that didn't mean Impression and he knew it well. Here, he ran his hands over the shell, I know dragons aren't much for memory but can you try to hang onto that when I go? Look out for the people who do the boring stuff nobody cares about. If you and your rider ever get power give them respect, give them a choice.

Sirocco was a lot better than many places but a drudge was still a drudge, the Weyr's leaders told them their value in their pay: nothing.

Oh how lovely you are, Ceony murmured as Falling's warmth enveloped her. She caressed the shell gently, sending it her own feelings of warmth, of the sun bright on her face and the light sparkling all around.

It's okay, if it's not all good, Ceony said earnestly. I have stood and failed before; I understand the pain of that. She was a gentle sort, and bookish, but-- She could handle hurt, too, even if it wasn't fun.

But Falling wasn't wrong. I'm a little afraid, she admitted. Bonding to a fire lizard isn't the same thing. But then I see the relationship between my brother and his dragon--and I know that I want that too.

She fell silent as she considered this conversation with Falling. And I want to prove to myself that I can do it, that I can protect the things I love. Perhaps some of her desire for Impression stemmed from dragons being in her blood, and she wanted to share in that.

What do you want? she asked the egg. What is it that you're looking for?

Oh man, she would have loved to hug the egg. But she knew there would be consequences if she did that. But she did have a plan.

"Once you hatch, come find me. I promise I'll give you a hug then, okay?" She then considered what Windswept had said about being unafraid. Tentatively, she answered.

"I think I can be, but it's hard to say for certain until I'm in a certain situation," she answered honestly. "But I don't tend to be afraid of much. I've heard that's a fault, but I'm not terribly worried about it. If I'm to Impress, that means I'm to fight Thread, right? And fighting Thread means you have to be fearless in the face of something that could kill you. I think being unafraid goes hand in hand with riding a dragon. And I'm ready."

It was an odd sensation being drawn into another's mind, even one that sought to be as comforting as Dreamer. Sure she had been spoken to by dragons before but it wasn't the same. Those minds knew what they wanted and usually exactly how to express themselves. Of course they also had the minds of their riders to get context from. Questions shouldn't have been a surprise from one without that yet. She was a thoughtful one and gave the question due consideration. It deserved it didn't it? The whole purpose of the exercise was to let the forming minds inside the eggs get to know what the options were that awaited them on the sands. She knew that.

Hello. I'm here to get to know you. We all are.

The smile that was normally present on her lips was evident in her mind's voice as well. It took much to take that especially with something as new and exciting as this going on. Warm and inviting was what she got from Dreamer so far. Definitely a good place to start. And one that hadn't already been crowded around, if they really wanted to know just what the eggs thought of them wasn't it best to do it one on one?

I guess I seek to find my place. I wonder if it's on these sands. Do you happen to know yours?

Sure the odds could be considered in her favor with rider blood in her veins depending on who you asked, but that didn't always mean anything. Not that she had no place, even if she were to always remain without a dragon herself. The question she had asked didn't refer to the one the dragon would choose or even the inevitable fight against thread. It wasn't her place to ask the decision of an egg or dragon, more so as it had many more people to meet still. It was more along the lines of what makes you YOU? Perhaps though it was too early to tell that in an egg so new.

New as she was to weyr life still - even if it had been a while now, she reminded herself - Lesalia could recite all of the rules that had been drilled into their heads for weeks now. They were told them again right before they were allowed onto the sands, but she couldn't even begin to keep her thoughts from wandering to the eggs. So close, they were so close! What would they be like? Would it be anything like touching a firelizard or wher egg? They'd been told what it would be like, of course, but she knew everything they'd been told wouldn't - couldn't - do them justice.

And then the moment they were let out onto the sands, Lesalia wasted no time striding towards the great gold, bowed low as she'd been intrsucted, and paid her respects. When she finished she straightened up and moved aside to allow her fellow candidates space to do so themselves, and to ask for guidance. Should she ask for help too?

...nah.

Without missing a beat Lesalia turned and headed towards the eggs, her gait slow as her eager gaze roamed over the lot of them. She'd never been around dragon eggs before, and isn't this why she'd agreed to become a candidate when she'd been Searched? To see the eggs, to touch them, to watch the babies hatch and perhaps bond to one, if one thought her a suitable partner. Would one of these choose her? ...well, there was only one way to find out, and it wasn't by standing around gawking at them.

But which egg should she go to first? She had plenty of time to see all of them over the next few days, surely, so she didn't worry about missing any. But which to see first, hmm... Conflicted seemed to be very popular right off the bat, as were the other larger eggs, so she turned towards some of the smaller ones. The aptly-named Hidden egg caught her eye first, with its surface glittering like a polished gem but hidden away behind its siblings, so she smiled a little and headed towards it. Once she drew close enough she gently pressed her hands to its sparkling surface, curiosity and eager excitement bubbling away.

Arria
The Conflicted egg couldn’t make a real sound, but the feeling of a gasp floated delicately across Arria’s mind just the same. If that was what flying was… That’s what I want to do! it exclaimed. The presence around Arria’s mind threw her memory back at her, but the swooping and diving and exhilaration were maginified. I want to be the best flyer on the whole planet. Bound as closely as they were Conflicted could sense Arria’s feelings about her life, but it didn’t know what to do with them. She had had an easy life and felt like she hadn’t been tested, but - If you find your partner here you will be tested, and you will find out how brave you truly are, it assured her eagerly.

It wanted her to find her partner, and because of that, the Conflicted egg peeled itself away from her mind. Go take risks among my sibilngs, it said, sounding sulky and not a little jealous over the prospect of her meeting the other eggs. I hope you find your partner, Arria.

Lorux
Friendly went uncharacteristically quiet at Lorux’s request. The presence within almost seemed to wrap itsself around the thoughts. Bring joy. Give choices. Treat those who did the boring stuff with respect. It seemed to cling to the word drudge, the thought echoing. Instead of asking questions, it moved through Lorux’s mind, finding what it was looking for and pulling away. There was still kindness right under the surface, but the presence within turned serious. They’re trapped? The egg sounded very much offended. Whatever it saw of drudges in Lorux’s mind, it didn’t like. You were one of them. You are kind, and generous with your time and humor. But you feel resentful of those who didn’t live this life like you did? You can help, can’t you? Make it better. I do not want to see anyone live such a life. Friendly paused, considering his request again. I will do my best to hold onto these words. But you may have to remind me.

Ceony
There was a sound that was distinctly reminiscent of a snort. Lovely? It doubted it. Still, it was nice for her to think so, even if she was prone to seeing the best in things. Did she highlight what was barely there, or see something in nothing? Did it matter? Deciding it didn’t, Falling let go of that particular thought. To be afraid, and yet stand here despite that… The presence seemed to surround her, seeming to study every inch. There is a bravery in that. Steel your spine, Ceony. The path ahead will require you to be strong in the face of your fear. The voice was firm. Falling could feel the warmth, the admiration of her brother that colored her thoughts. If you do that, those you love will feel the warmth of your protection. You are capable of this strength.

What did it want? Falling faltered for a moment. What did it want? A feeling of cold loneliness pressed in for a moment, before being replaced once more with its warmth. To protect. To prove that I can. The words were succinct, as if there were more there that Falling just wasn’t quite voicing.

Maelia
A feeling of pleasure followed Maelia’s promise to hug Windswept after it hatched. Promise? It asked. Of course, the egg wasn’t entirely sure what a hug was, or if it would even remember Maelia’s promise when it hatched. But it certainly didn’t seem like a bad idea! And if it was, Windswept would deal with it then! I’m not afraid either. It will be dangerous, but it will be fun. But perhaps being unafraid isn’t always a good thing? It can make one act rashly, and have consequences we don’t want. The wind stilled for just a moment, as if the presence within was considering it’s own words. Maybe being brave is better, because when we’re brave we do things even when they scare us. What do you think?

Miradena
Hm. She didn’t know what her place was. The Dreamer Egg’s mind swirled around Miradena’s, casually rifling through its contents as it considered her. It was apparent that the egg was confident in itself, and confident in what it knew already, but there was always something new to learn and experience. It wanted to learn from the candidates as much as it hoped they could learn from it. Of course I know my place. It’s right here, visiting with you and anyone else who comes to see me, it said simply. In its perusal of Miradena’s mind it found something that made it pause, and the feeling of delight it exuded couldn’t be missed. Oh, how wonderful - you love to learn! What sorts of things do you enjoy learning about? Hm. Although… I can see here that perhaps you’re not the best with other people. Why is that? You can learn so much from them.

Lesalia
Oh, a visitor! A visitor? Oh dear. Well, this was very exciting and very...well not bad but was it really good? Surely it was good. Otherwise it wouldn’t have a visitor! Right? The presence inside the Hidden Egg brushed against Lesalia’s mind, light and eager, before dancing away to a safe distance. Oh, it’s so nice to meet you! it said, its myriad emotions dancing across Lesalia’s mind like sunlight coming through a faceted gem. What if the visitor wasn’t supposed to be there and went away before Hidden could learn anything from it? Well, it couldn’t have that! The presence inside crept back towards Lesalia, hesitantly but swiftly rifling through the candidate’s mind. Are you supposed to be here though? Is it ok?

There were many cracks within Lili's mind for Conflicted to fill without even trying to find any.

Its response first brought her joy - the eggs were always so lovely - but its sudden wariness almost startled her. She had confused it, no doubt with her own self-doubt and insecurities, and guilt promptly wrapped her heart tight in its cold grip. Who am I? She echoed, somewhat baffled by the question but mostly floundering as she tried to think of how to actually answer it. Did she even know?

...how did she even answer such a question?

It took her a moment or two of floundering, her anxiety and uncertainty mounting, as she wondered how to answer the egg. I'm Lilimina, formerly of Sapphire Hold, and then of High Reaches Weyr. I'm my parents' youngest child, she told it, picturing the Weyr itself before each of her family members, although she lingered longest on her mother and father, the former especially.

Did that answer its question? Should she say more? What else could she say? I'm... I'm not very good at talking to others. I'm sorry. As she finished she couldn't help but feel crestfallen; she had confused poor Conflicted egg with her own inner turmoil, no doubt. Had she upset it? Should she leave? ...would she get in trouble if she did upset it?

Confidence was something that the egg most likely had more of than Mira herself did. At least in this. The dragons watching, both on guard and the mother herself, along with the eggs had all the say. How many would think it odd to willingly let another have freedom to roam within your mind? She herself did when the directions were first given. Done in the friendly manner which it was though it felt much more comfortable than she had expected it to. It was a learning experience for both of them. That was always a good thing.

I do like to learn. There is always more to know. I learn to help and to heal others.

The joy that came from the mind within the egg was a clear indication that it wished to know all it could as well.

People are harder to understand than knowledge. I know I have a tendency to prefer facts over feelings at times. Some find that a bit rough to take. If they want to teach something I will listen, I just prefer to stick to the truth of the matter while I do.

Detail oriented, meticulous, and much easier to face than other things was knowledge to Miradena.

You wrapped me in warmth, Ceony told Falling as she caught wind of its doubt. And that is kindness. You didn't have to do that. She ran her hands lightly over the shell, as she might have done for Bitsy when he curled in her lap.

Her expression softened at its words, and the way it praised her. That filled Ceony with its own sort of warmth, though it was not entirely separate from the dragon's mind pressed against hers. I will remember this, she promised it. You're very wise. It understood so much for a creature that was still in the shell, and who had never seen the outside world--except perhaps through its mother's eyes. I will be brave, and your belief in me will strengthen me.

For a moment, she was content to bask in the feeling of Falling's mind. Then it faltered briefly, the cold reappearing. This time it was tinged with a loneliness that Ceony did not like, but that she understood. She leaned forward to rest her forehead against the cool shell--just a barely-there press of her skin against it.

It's hard to be alone, she whispered to it. Ceony adored her brother, and was very close to him. But she didn't easily make friends outside of him. She sighed a little. She and Falling were not so different. But your desires are so noble. I know you can do it, too. You'll protect those you love, and I'll help you however I can. Ceony offered the dragon the warmth of her own mind and hoped that might be enough for now.

Mae considered Windswept's words for a moment. The little one in the egg did seem to be on to something. There was a fine, though definite, line between bravery and fearlessness. She'd been called fearless on numerous occasions, but for the life of her, she couldn't recall if she had ever been brave.

"I think," she started, running a hand over the surface of the shell. "That you have a very good point. I've certainly acted rashly in my determination to be unafraid. Being brave has its own set of consequences, but perhaps more can be done when acting in bravery, than in showing you have no fear." Her smile softened. Not that the little dragon could see it, but she hoped it could perhaps feel the emotion behind it.

"I'll have to keep that in mind, thank you. And I promise you, once you hatch, you'll have at least one person waiting to give you a giant hug!"
