It was amazing how well the threat from the small green had worked to keep the brown rider away. F'lish had gone out of his way to avoid both the dragon and her rider since. Lydess was dressed in her riding leathers as she worked to fasten the riding harness around the small green. Rucksacks of her belongings were tied to that as well, an easy burden for the dragon as they weighed less than the sacks of firestone that would normally reside there. There was one last thing she had to do before leaving the place that had been her home for over five years.

She made her way to the scheduled meeting with her Weyrleaders and wingleader. There she thanked them for the understanding of the situation in which she had found herself, and for allowing her this attempt at extricating herself from it. Honestly she had no idea if the possessive brown rider would in fact stay out of her life after she moved or not, though the threat from Niaveth had certainly spooked him for the time being. Not that his dragon couldn't easily best the much smaller one. Those doubts were dismissed from her mind for now. She was told that the bluerider G'tan, a fellow wingmate, would escort her as he was the one that normally delivered messages from this Weyr to that one. When finished she wished them well and received the same along with the direction to meet G'tan in twenty minutes above the bowl. With that she was dismissed.

She made the way back to the weyr that was no longer hers slowly, she had time with everything all ready to go. It was with a small sense of sadness that she looked over the familiar paths that she walked for what could very well be the last time. It was as her feet came to the entry of the last of the inside potion of the Weyr she would see that a voice disturbed her thoughts.

All will be well.

A small smile crossed Lydess' lips at the reassurance even as she crossed to pat the green on the hip. She grabbed the riding helmet and pushing the long hair beneath it fixed it firmly in place.

Let's go.

Lydess climbed up to settle within the straps and barely a moment later Niaveth pushed off into the cold air to meet the blue. The image was by the blue and rider so that Lydess too knew where they would appear in the south. With that they went between.

--------------------------------

When the two popped out of Between the sun was shining down on what looked to be a never-ending vista of sand with the dormant volcano the Weyr was built in visible in the distance. This was the arrival point for two reasons. One so that Lydess could see the surrounding area. Two so that she could see how impressive the place really was for a Weyr not built with the ways lost to them. G'tan gave the pair beside him a moment to take it all in before signaling that they should head for the Weyr. This they approached by air even Niaveth holding the pace the blue set, even she wished to make a good first impression.

To the dragon and rider on watch this day Niaveth's voice rang clear as she identified them, a gentle breeze whispering against their minds. Once permission was given the pair gracefully circled down to land though the blue hovered just above the sand.

"Welcome to Sirocco. I hope you find what you need here. Send a message when you get settled and I'll see that you get that chair of yours."

There was a big grin on his face at that before he gained altitude once more and disappeared between, leaving the green and rider alone in unfamiliar territory.

The rainy season had begun but for now the sky was clear and Sapphire was making the most of the opportunity to clean her threadfall straps atop the flat expanse of Sirocco's so-called 'weyrbowl'. Naturally her decision to sit up here rather than in her weyr or on its private ledge had nothing at all to do with the fact that she knew a new rider was to arrive today, one who would be her wingmate at least for a time. Nothing at all.

They come, Lishanth said some time after they had first settled down together, his voice curling and coiling through Sapphire's mind like thick smoke and flickering embers.

Sapphire paused in the act of working grease into the loop of leather around one of the buckles and looked up through Lishanth's eyes as the unfamiliar green and a vaguely familiar blue approached the mesa. Be a dear and ask them over will you? She was terribly keen to see if this new arrival would be a friend or not!

Lishanth hummed acknowledgement and, as the pair landed, he reached out his whispy thoughts to Niaveth. Welcome to Sirocco Niaveth; I am Lishanth, my rider Sapphire would be pleased to meet your own if she would care to join us over here. Whatever the newcomers were like Lishanth was confident that there were ways that they could improve, they were not Siroccan and that seemed to come with a lot of baggage for many smaller pairs - larger pairs too though in a different way - and he would be quite pleased to search those ways out and steer the couple forward.

It was a given that any who were interested in the new pair had their own reasons for that curiosity. Luckily she knew that the one reason that would have worried her wasn't an issue at this time. Lydess had always kept good track of the moods of the small green as well as the timing, and knew there was some time yet before she had to even think about what a flight here might mean. Well at least the flight that would involve her own dragon.

That dragon's voice was a playful summer wind as the message from Lishanth and his rider was passed along. Niaveth was a social creature, really if you wanted racing buddies it was always good to make friends first. Her rider however was more practical in her reasoning . To Lydess it made sense to agree as she needed to know whom she would be flying with, in the fall if not in the same wing.

But of course dear. Just no showing off, let's get to know them before you start showing them up. Tell Lishanth we'll be up in a moment.

Laughter rang in her mind for a moment before Niaveth sent that breezy voice to the blue. She'd behave today, she could always leave the blue in the dust later.

Lydess agrees Lishanth. We will be up momentarily.

It was a simple thing for the rider to take her place amongst the straps once more. The lift off was gentle Niaveth taking just a bit of extra care to show that she could at least manage not to disturb the sand more then was necessary. It was only a brief play of wind under wingsails that brought them close. Sure they could have walked, but the rider knew that Niaveth didn't want to show off her flaws this early and she was so much more graceful in the air.

It was barely anytime at all before the small green settled near the larger blue. As the rider slipped to the ground that green passed eyes whirling with the colors of curiosity over the pair of strangers.

It is strange not seeing everything covered in the white of blowing snow. The warm sun is nice though.

She spoke to both her rider and the blue. She didn't speak to Sapphire herself yet, that would fall to Lydess.

"I'm Lydess formerly of Telgar and the green beauty is Niaveth. It's a pleasure to meet you and your blue miss. "

Sure she knew the name as Lishanth had told it to the green but it seemed best to keep the formalities in place. Right now she needed to make friends here, or at least avoid making enemies. Not that she had any idea the standards she had to measure up to. Nor the fact that the blue was sizing them up for improvements.

"I don't suppose you would happen to know who I should speak with about finding out where my weyr will be located? Or where I might find this G'oain, really anyone from Delta Wing to tell me when and where I should report for drills?"

She wasn't even sure if those should be her first steps but it felt like as good a place as any to start.

Hummm.

The newcommer was quite a skinny thing, a pretty enough face but she needed to fill out if she wanted to suit fashionable gowns.... Of course, this was a concern for them as riders but old habits were hard to shake and truthfully Sapphire had no wish to do so! If she had to suffer through muscular arms she could at least be glad that she was still plump where many of her peers ran to rangy and rawboned.

The assessment Sapphire made of Lydess took less than a moment and took place behind a welcoming smile that showed not even a hint of the thoughts that had been running through her mind. "Welcome Lydess!" Sapphire said as she got to her feet, her accent ringing of money from the High Reaches area. "I am Sapphire of blue Lishanth, formerly of Sapphire Hold." What would Lydess make of her sharing a name with her Hold of birth? It would be interesting to see if she could guess from her expression.

"And I think I can answer all of those questions," Sapphire continued with a delighted little clap of her hands. "It just so happens that I fly with Delta wing myself, I would be glad to show you around! We have a good number of empty weyrs here at Sirocco, do you have a preference for the elevation?" Sapphire herself had chosen a weyr quite far down the side of the mesa; the view was not quite so fine but it had the advantage of an entrance via the lower caverns, it made having visitors and help in so much easier than those which could only be accessed by dragonaback.

I have known no other way, Lishanth said softly to Niaveth. It is good to bask here, though you have arrived during the rainy season. Later in the turn we shall have bright hot sun all day, your rider should be careful of her pale skin as the months progress.

Lydess wouldn't have been concerned over the assessment that Sapphire made over her own form. She was riding fit and had always tended to the thinner side anyway, it was what she was used to and as long as no one else or the dragon she rode made a big deal about it why should she. Gaining weight and trying to flesh out some more curves was something that had definitely not been stressed in training. As to fashionable dresses, that tended to be in the eye of the beholder. As long as what she wore fit well and suited her the rest didn't matter.

But then none of that would show either as she had no clue what thought went through another's mind. Besides she was busy letting her own assessment take place of the rider before her. What thoughts ran through her mind as the blue rider spoke? A northern accent that one would guess started out much stronger, but then most here would have that with it being a newer Weyr it was just a matter of from which northern part. The money that was carried with it was a bit more unusual for one who accepted a search. The woman was not Weyrbred then, a Hall was a possibility if her parents were less content with settling for a small position than her own had been. Not that there was long to wait for that answer.

Lydess knew enough to know that most that shared a direct line to a hold of any type tended toward the presumptuous, they deemed they held a place higher than most others. And one that shared a name with said hold was probably even more so. All that would cross her features however was a slight look of surprise at the coincidence, she had learned long ago to control that. They were all equal here anyway, thread made no distinction no matter where you came from. Theoretically one gave up those connections when they became riders, though most kept at least part of the attitude. Only time would tell if Sapphire was one of those. It was a fair assumption that the woman had probably not set out to impress.

"It's good to know that at least one person here can tell me when and where to show up for drills. Not to mention at least one friendly face there."

As to the weyr that would take a bit more thought. She knew the preferences that Niaveth would choose if given an opportunity.

"Well Niaveth here is one to prefer a view off a nice sunny ledge, but then she tends to like to watch everyone else. Personally I'll give her the height she desires as long as I can still walk up from inside as well, even if it ends being a longer walk than it could be. One way to keep in shape, and you know how our dragons like their naps left undisturbed. "

Okay so the green liked to watch and size up her competition, who might outrace her if given a chance. Who might be more nimble. Not that she expected any to really surpass her in any of these.

The snow can be fun it scatters so well over everything with just the slightest beat of a wing. But it gets cold so quickly, and the sun remains hidden behind dark clouds.

"Of course!" Sapphire dimpled a pretty smile at Lydess. "You will be excused drills tomorrow as you've only just arrived, but if you would like to come along and meet everyone all the same that would be wonderful! Perhaps we can take breakfast together? You can meet my dear friend Noralell as well, she flies with Alpha Wing." Sapphire was very proud of Nora for that, it wasn't something she felt she could ever do even if Lishanth were small and fast enough to join.

You could, Lishanth replied privately to his rider, coiling his ethereal voice around her mind and heart. If I were small enough you would find the courage, given time. As it was however he was content to fly in Delta wing; Delta was not so fast paced as Beta for example but he felt useful where he was, where he could help to encourage and guide wounded and inexperienced pairs back into the higher flying wings.

"As high as possible but with access from the caverns?" Sapphire touched a finger to her lips, her expression one of demure thoughtfulness. "Well at present most of the bottom third of weyrs have access from the caverns, though our miners are slowly cutting more entrances where it's safe to do so. You could take your pick of any of those that are empty, your Niaveth is small so you aren't limited by which dragon caverns she could comfortably fit into. We could have a fly over in a little while if you like, I will point out the weyrs I know are unoccupied."

I do not mind the cold, or clouds, Lishanth replied to Niaveth. I think Sapphire would prefer somewhere a little cooler than Sirocco truthfully, though that's a moot point as no other Weyr would gladly take us. Besides, Sapphire would never want to leave Nora and he couldn't imagine Nora leaving Sirocco and the prestige of Alpha Wing for another Weyr where she would be among the least of riders.

"I do believe I'd like that, it is good to know with whom you fly."

Niaveth was small and speedy enough for Alpha, though she was still too young to be proven a good fit, at least as far as Telgar had been concerned. She was still a lower ranked color though. Time would tell there, she had to learn control slightly better still. She followed orders well enough, she just had to learn to keep the speed in check when it wasn't needed. Then they'd see how long she could hold out in a flight better.

At the mention of Noralell, Niaveth's eyes whirled in curiosity, if the pair were in Alpha that meant a potential race partner. Those were always good and she did need to show at least some of them here just how well she could handle herself in the air, in ways other than a threadfall.

"I believe you have piqued the interest of a certain green here, though I also think she should get to know those here before she challenges them all. Good natured as that challenge may be."

The wave of disappointment that came through into Lydess' mind at that was no shock. Not that it would make much difference in the long run. Someone no doubt would take her up on a race soon enough.

"As long as she can watch those around her she should be happy. There are plenty of places to catch the sun."

It will take some time to get used to the heat, and the lack of all but sand but I think Lydess will adapt.

One advantage to this being a newer pair, they had impressed after the beginning of the less traditional one's down here. They may not have had actual contact with it that far north, but the knowledge of what they were joining down here was there. So the blue with the young woman wasn't as much of a surprise as it could have been. She had at least known a bit of what she was getting into.

"Challenge?" Sapphire gave another pretty smile and laughed lightly. "Well there will be no shortage of that here! I don't know if Yasameenth will take up the offer but you will find many more than willing to oblige. Not Lishanth though, I think he is rather too large to be a fair match against your little Niaveth." A lot of the greens and blues who had come to Sirocco had come due to pride, to a loathing of being treated as the least of dragons, and that made a lot of them keen to prove themselves in tests of speed and skill.

"Do you have designs on joining Alpha Wing yourself?" Sapphire asked with a curious tilt of her head. "I know that some green and blueriders came to Sirocco largely because of its existence!" Was Lydess one such? Had she come seeking the one Weyr on Pern that had a wing formed solely of the swiftest of greens and blues? It had seemed a strange and foolish idea to Sapphire when she had first arrived, but so too had women Impressing male dragons.

You have expanded your mind; I am proud of you, Lishanth said softly to his rider, sending her a feeling of warmth and the luxurious smell of a wood fire along with the words.

To Niaveth he said; She will indeed and it will do her good to strive and change.; we find the best in ourselves when we are tested.

Niaveth wasn't so much interested in the challenge of a race to prove herself to others, so much as just because it was damn fun. This was a dragon who was almost happier to be in the sky than on a nice sunny ledge, a sprinter through and through. She knew she was probably fastest, might as well let everyone see it. Besides then they had to see if they were better. It worked so many ways, if you win you make the loser need to prove themselves and you get another game out of it. If you lost, or let them think they won you got to prove just how wrong they were later on. Perhaps just perhaps you got to shock someone as well, dragon or human.

"She'll find someone to play with, she always does. "

That was something that had never been an issue. You'd think at some point the novelty would wear off. Maybe that was where the notoriously short memories of dragons came into play.

"There are advantages to the larger size. I imagine your Lishanth has better endurance. Though that is something that we're trying to work on."

The key word was trying, you try and convince a young dragon that they needed to work at improving something.

The reasons she had come truly had nothing to do with Alpha, and the realized usefulness of blues and greens. It was worth thinking on however.

"I don't know if I'd aspire so high yet, I need to get my bearings first, learn what it's like without winter. "

She could admit some of what had brought her though the depth of it would remain hers for now. She didn't know just how well an obvious member of a holding family would feel about the desire to not be what was expected of a traditional green. It was much less about position than respect in general. The fact that Sapphire was here might mean an open mind just as easily as it might not.

"I thought a change might do me some good, there were some things I felt I should get away from."

A bit selfish, yes, but one might also consider it a survival instinct.

Change is what she looks for.

Nevermind that the tiny green had tried to put the fear of God (or Dragon) in the overly possessive man that had called himself a Weyrmate.

"I'm sure she shall, dragons are such adaptable creatures," Sapphire said with a little smile as she looked over at her own blue beauty. After she had gazed adoringly at him for a few moments she turned back to Lydess and added; "Why within a couple of weeks she will have a bevy of friends, and have quite forgotten that she ever lived anywhere else." The short memory of dragons could be a disadvantage at times but mostly it seemed to be a blessing, not least because they easily forgot the pain and trauma of threadscore between one Fall and the next - a dragon was far more likely to be caught up by the hungry tendrils than their rider.

"Lishanth can last almost a whole Threadfall," Sapphire continued proudly with a slight incline of her head to acknowledge Lydess' comment as true. "He is better able to stand up to strong winds than smaller dragons too, and has a larger flame." She knew that Lishanth hoped to one day fly falls in their entirety though this was not a desire she shared in the least; the less time she had to spend in the sky risking her life the better, and yet she could not deny him her efforts to press onward in the sky. Lishnath believed that she was strong and brave and she did not wish to disappoint him.

"Sirocco's climate does take some adjusting to for those of us used to mountains and snow, and the sunshine is so terribly bad for the complexion." Sapphire pursed her lips and shook her head slightly. "Unavoidable for a rider, though I do my best to keep myself covered." She had no desire to wrinkle like a raisin or a farmworker! Masks that covered the whole face were the key....

Humm, now what had Lydess wanted to get away from? Sapphire's gossip senses tingled and she nodded sympathetically. "The northern Weyrs can be terribly unappreciative of greens, I am sure you will find a wonderful fresh start here," she said, watching Lydess' face as she spoke to see if she'd hit on or near the reason for her departure.

Sirocco is certainly a change from any other Weyr, Lishanth replied with a thoughtful feeling to his words. We are far less restricted in what we can and cannot do here than in northern Weyrs; they would do well to learn from our example and see merit over the colour of a dragon's hide or their rider's sex.

"A whole fall is something that Niaveth will never be able to manage, we've both accepted that. My hope is that she can eventually learn to pace herself a bit better. However I think that if that never happens I prefer the ease of movement anyway. If in the first half of the fall though she'll usually recover well enough to help fly sweeps. In the mountains that was something the smaller size was beneficial for, it made it easier to maneuver close to crevices in some areas. But then everyone is partial to their own dragons."

The last was said with a smile, it was true after all how could they not be when that dragon shared your mind. Not that there was a blindness to the advantages or disadvantages of the other colors, you just couldn't imagine being paired with another.

"It is good that there are blues that can make a whole fall though, can't leave it all to those that chase the queens, they're too big to catch everything."

The winds did occasionally become an obstacle, it had yet to force them to stay grounded. In part that was only due to the stubbornness of dragons, they belonged in the sky why should a little wind stop that. Of course that may have only been something her own thought.

"Protecting the skin from the sun and sand can't be that much more difficult than preventing it from freezing in the middle of winter."

The wrinkles she could handle if they were to come her way, it was the itchy dry skin that bothered her most. That she imagined would still be an issue in such a dry climate even if it wasn't caused by the cold seasons.

Sapphire would find no nerve hit, the reasons for leaving Telgar had little to do with the fact she rode green. Outside of mating flights there was nothing the color of dragon could really have controlled, and neither had known exactly who they were getting involved with until after the first of those. In that Lydess was grateful they had some time before Niaveth would rise again, she wanted to truly know what she was in for before that happened.

She has always been happy to take whatever place she is needed in, all that disappoints her in that is the fact that some of those places she could help were expected to be better suited to others. She likes to please others, hopefully she will be appreciated here.

But not taken advantage of was the unspoken part of that. The green did so enjoy poking around into the mind of her rider, but she was less likely to know what shouldn't be told to those that they didn't yet know. The relationship problems that had brought them here remained unmentioned as it was something the dragon didn't fully understand. She could pull the memories and the emotions they had caused from the memory of her bonded but there was little to compare it to to tell why it was wrong. She knew it was because her rider did, it was when there had been true fear that she had threatened. No she hadn't liked feeling how unhappy Lydess had been in the relationship but what could she have done, choosing another as mate may or may not have helped anything. That thought was also something she had pulled from the mind of her human, more than once at that.

Coming we knew that there were differences in the way of thinking on that. Our pairing is not so old that she hadn't heard of those before we found each other. It was not for the color reasons that we came, it was more the attitudes of those that live here in general.

Had the dragon perhaps given a clue? Bad dragon.

"Of course!" Sapphire dimpled a pretty smile, fluttered her fan at her face and gazed over at Lishanth. "We are more biased in their favour than to any lover, more even than any parent to their child." She wouldn't trade her blue for anything, not even for the largest and most powerful Queen on Pern.

To Lydess' comment about the weather Sapphire smiled again and made a slight gesture with her fan. "Oh I wouldn't know very much about that; I spent little time outside during the winter in Sapphire Hold, my friends and I ventured out only on the best days, or in order to be transported to gathers." She missed the ease and softness of her old life and old body a great deal sometimes, often even, but she was proud of what she did now and even more proud of Lishanth. Without dragons such as he Pern would be lost and there would be no gathers for anyone at all.

Exactly, Lishanth agreed privately. Your love of indulgence is not a fault Sapphire, and that you are learning to see beyond it is a virtue. You have too much to offer to spend your life sipping wine and fluttering fans with no thought to greater things.

As Niaveth spoke again Lishanth's mind reached out and coiled soft, smoky, and thoughtful against the green's. Sirocco has many beneficial attitudes beyond how it views the colours, that is true, he replied with a soft hum of acknowledgement. All people are given a chance, valued, and protected. It is in seeing that colour and gender do no dictate worth that have lead to these attitudes however, in never seeing a person or a dragon merely as a tool or a thing.

Sapphire listened to Lishanth's words with interest, and through him she also picked up what Niaveth had said. The attitude in general? Humm.

Between the name matching the hold that Sapphire had come from and the newly added comments about not having to go out in the cold of winter when she didn't wish it the picture it painted of the girl's life wasn't one that Lydess would ever have had. It was as likely to lead her to believe that the bluerider would be a stuck up brat much like the man that was in actuality her father. She could only hope that she was wrong in that assumption, or that the life she know had made a difference. If not Sapphire would find herself disappointed in that the one to whom she now spoke was of nowhere near as noble of a birth. Only time would tell there, especially as the conversation between dragon and rider tended to be private.

"You never played in the snow as a child, when somehow it seemed as if the cold didn't matter? No throwing snowballs at friends? Even as an adult it isn't so bad so long as you know to bundle up before going out for any length of time, just don't try and run across any ice."

The smoke of Lishanth's mind met with the breeze that was Niaveth's. The rider may have secrets that she didn't wish to openly discuss so quickly with those that were unknown, but the dragon was less careful of her words. All the green knew was that the way her mate's rider had treated her own had felt wrong, even if she hadn't been able to fix it. At least until it had been headed so clearly toward physical violence.

We will do what we can to show that we are worthy of being here and fighting beside you. Hopefully all are willing to see it.

The green didn't want her rider to be unhappy anymore, she deserved better than she had been given by her weyrmate and those who had tolerated his attitude towards her.

We just want to be happy and there was some back there that made it so she wasn't.

Sapphire's brown crinkled just a little as Lydess described playing in the snow and she shook her head. "Oh no, that wouldn't have been very ladylike, I certainly wouldn't have been allowed even if I had wanted to." Had she? She couldn't recall ever having such an impulse... well perhaps when she had been very young and hadn't known better, before she had realised the importance of image and discovered more refined pleasures. "I suppose children of the Weyrs don't have such expectations placed upon them though," she added magnanimously after a moment with a little smile for the greenrider.

Lishanth hummed softly and sent a feeling of encouragement to the small green. I am glad that you were able to leave them behind, and I for one look forward to fighting beside you. We are not perfect here in Sirocco - nobody is - but we do strive to give everyone a chance, prejudging dragons serves nobody well.

"Ah, but as children there were few of us that worried about appearances. We wanted to have fun, not impress the adults. But then my parents are crafters so they had much keeping them busy and we had to occupy ourselves when we had free time. "

It must have been very boring childhood indeed if Sapphire had spent all of it trying to fit into a ladylike image. Or so it seemed to Lydess, she couldn't imagine having spent the winters inside especially as that far north they lasted for some time. The greenrider took the one next to her to be one that would be scandalized by someone jumping into a puddle made from the rains for fear it might dirty the hem of a dress based on that.

"And what was it you did for fun then? "

The question was practical in nature as well, it gave input as to whether or not Sapphire was one to ask about what there was here to do during the free hours as well even if the two clearly didn't run in the same circles. Not that station mattered once the dragons became involved.

There are many that think they are perfect. I trust that has not changed even here.

There was almost the mental equivalent of a snort at the beginning of that statement. Human or dragon someone always thought themselves the best and impossible of doing wrong. Those were the best to beat when racing. Not that Niaveth took joy in squashing another's ego, but it made it so she had something to prove. Usually she succeeded in that, luckily the green wasn't one to take a loss poorly even to those that gloat. The fun was in the race itself not the outcome.

Sapphire gave Lydess a politely perplexed look, she couldn't imagine not caring about how you appeared to others... But she and Lydess were clearly from very different backgrounds, as the greenrider said she supposed it wouldn't matter so much to somebody who worked with their hands like that.

"Oh my friends and I had many games to occupy us," Sapphire said, a smile returning to her face with the fond memories. "We might play hide and seek, croquet, hoop toss, or all kinds of board games. We rode as well, I had the dearest little pony when I was a girl and a sweet lovely mare when I was tall enough for a runner. I had to give them both up when Papa and I came south but they went to a good friend and her little siblings, so I still hear of them in letters." She did miss Starshine and Midnight Glory but she was glad to know that they were happy and adored still.

Indeed, Lishanth agreed with a soft, wispy feeling of amusement. I pity those who believe themselves perfect, they do not realise that they can still strive to be better than they are. We will never reach perfection but a life spent in pursuit of it is a worthy life indeed.

The more Sapphire spoke about what she had done growing up, the more it was clear they hadn't agreed on the definition of fun, at least not when little. Hide and seek was good for a child, especially when you had a whole hold to play in, as were board games but the others grew boring so quickly. Riding would have been fine too surely, but that was something left to those in positions of privilege only and not something she'd had much opportunity to find out about.

"I never did understand croquet really. Whenever I saw people playing it they were so quiet, looked quite dull and slow."

While they might not agree on what was fun, it would still be nice to know what there was here to pass the time with, especially as the desert itself didn't really provide the most welcoming environment for outdoor activities.

"I assume most spend free time here inside as much as possible, what with no real way to escape the heat. Not that any of us have much of that."

Between thread, drills, and just tending to dragons and gear free time was a rare thing.

But what exactly is perfection?

That was something no two would ever agree upon. To Niaveth it was in perfectly executed maneuvers and riding the currents to the best advantage. But then she really was a simple dragon in her pleasures, the mental games some of her kind enjoyed did nothing to entertain her, speed, air beneath wings with the world looking small below, a sun soaked ledge or a cooling swim these were what made her tick.

Or should I ask what is perfection to you?

Dull? Humph! Well, it wasn't Lydess' fault that she lacked the class to appreciate the game she supposed and so it also wasn't really her fault that she lacked the class to realise she had been extremely rude. Oh well, she would indulge her.

Sapphire smiled prettily and made an airy gesture with her fan. "There is no accounting for tastes of course! If you would like to try it sometime however I'm sure we could have a little pitch set up on a corner of the mesa, we must preserve our traditions of course." Ah... the sporting and gaming ones that was, not the ones she violated by her bond with Lishanth. "But yes you are quite correct; during the heat of the day most everyone prefers the lower caverns to gather and socialise, but it can become quite lively on the mesa in the later afternoon and the evening. We have had many a fine gather up here by the light of stars, glows, and cooking fires; anything you have heard of Sirocco entertaining poorly is entirely false." Certainly it was a little more... a little more rustic than the grandeur of Fort or Benden for example but Sapphire had decided that the style suited Sirocco very well, and was obviously very much in vogue.

Perfection is impossible, Lishanth replied with a feeling of calm acceptance, yet within the smokyness of his thoughts was an edge of determination which came to the fore as he added; And as that is so, to me perfection is striving. When you have reached one goal there is always another way to better yourself, and what people should strive for depends on their own strengths and weaknesses. A little green like you will never fly a full fall and a large blue like me will never twist and turn in Alpha wing, but we can each strive to improve our strengths and mitigate our weaknesses.
