As soon as G'oain dismissed the wing Masalath banked and swooped down towards his ledge, reaching out with the warm vibrant tendrils of his thoughts Beramonth and H'win. Are you both alright? We're both in one piece, he said, sounding elated but tired. We've definitely earned our trip after that Fall, do you need to do much before we go? He could tell that Ilharen hoped they didn't, he was in one piece but the Fall had exhausted him completely and his side was hurting quite badly.

Warm water, Ilharen thought with a groan and a wry little smile. Warm water, and alcohol. And good company, which was more important than the alcohol and currently on a level with the hot water. He was soaked, sooty, sweaty but also cold; generally stinking as well as hurting and exhausted but still too high from the battle for any of it to have really got through to him yet - soon there would be hot springs and that would help with everything.

Just one stop. H'win packed a bag. Beramoth called back to Masalath & Ilharen as he and H'win dove fast and low toward their ledge. It would take H'win only a moment to dump the half-used firestone sacks and then strap on the small bag he had prepared. He did so, almost tripping with the stiff way he launched from Beramoth's back, but then he was just as quickly scrambled back atop the blue.

Beramoth, as anxious as his rider to get out of here leaped from the ledge before H'win was even fully strapped in.

"Hey!" The bluerider cried as he grabbed for the bag as it rose to his eye-level, and gripped tightly to a strap. Beramoth trumpeted to let Masalath know they were coming. H'win managed to secure himself and the bag more tightly, but he couldn't help but smile at the way the adrenaline had returned to his blood.

They rose higher into the air and H'win imagined the northern hot springs of northern Telgar. They would be snowy and gorgeous, their steam rising, the rocks soft with mosses and vibrant green even as the icicles rattled in the trees above. They would likely be lonely too, the snow making them difficult to get to for anyone not a dragonrider. Share with Masalath. H'win demanded, his mind laughing at all of their impatience. The dragon obliged without complaint.

Shall we? He asked the brown impatiently. He wanted to see the mountains too!

Good, we did too! Masalath replied as he touched down on his ledge and snaked his head into the cavern. Just inside a bag hung on a hook, he picked it up delicately in his teeth and turned to pass it to Ilharen, who tied it with clumsy fingers onto the harness. With this done Masalath ducked back out of his weyr, turned, and stepped lightly off the ledge once more.

As Beramoth's image arrived in his mind he levelled his course and sent a feeling of query to Ilharen, who patted his neck in acknowledgement. Yes, let's go!

A moment later the brown and his rider vanished into the void, bound for the northern continent.

Between was always a shock, the coldest of cold the blackest of black, it sent shivers through H'win and his sweaty skin. He felt the cold on his arm, char must have burned all the way through his wherhide. He sighed into the void, but then they arrived.

The dim morning light was somehow bright enough to make H'win wince. The sun, still hidden behind the mountains around them bounced its distant rays off of the snow. The pockets of steam rose up like a lazy mist, the hills and rocks sheltering them from the breeze. Down below H'win saw the pools. He huzzahed into the crisp morning air. He was glad that he remembered them well, though the perspective had worried him and some of the other northern riders had to share their images with Beramoth the day before.

There! H'win pointed to a snowy clearing north of the springs. The small valley was sheltered, but the trees would make it impossible for Beramoth and Masalath to land safely in the pools with all of their gear.

Beramoth landed in the snow, and H'win felt the dragon's pleasant surprise.

It is softer than sand! He told them and nuzzled his face into the snow, flapped his wings agian to watch is rise around him.

H'win it is lovely!
Beramoth swung his head back around to peer at his rider, as if H'win had kept this secret specifically from him.

"Aye. It is." He smiled widely and slid from Beramoth's back. He made fast work of the harness, afraid it would freeze to his dragon's hide in the northern cold. Finished, he turned to see if Ilharen needed aid climbing down or carrying anything. He wondered privately if Ilharen had ever seen anything like the snowy valley, with its grey and greens and whites, contrasted against the crisp blue and white cloudy sky.

It was like nothing he'd ever seen before.

H'win had described the sights, he'd even seen images of them - just now in order to get here for a start! Those things were quite different to appearing in crisp, cold air and looking down at strange woods and at whiteness. He had been north on occasion before now but there hadn't been anything like this!

It's beautiful! Masalath exclaimed as both he and his rider craned their necks around to drink in every detail, descending rather more slowly than Beramoth to give themselves time to see as much as they possibly could.

When eventually Masalath touched down Ilharen pulled his goggles down around his neck and sat up straight to stare around, his dark eyes wide and bright with wonder.

H'win's grin cracked even wider on his face, dimples pinching and he felt his eyes crinkle as he watched Ilharen stare at the valley. He waded through the waist-deep snow toward Masalath, the pack swung over his good shoulder.

"Awestruck?" H'win teased as he looked up at Ilharen. He patted Masalath on the side, happy that he too thought it so beautiful. Beramoth opened his mouth and ate a glob of the snow.

It is water! Bereamoth's confirmation of what H'win had told him previously was adorable, and H'win thought his blue looked like a weyrling again as he bounced and scooped up mouthfuls of the fluffy white mountain snow with his mouth with the dignity of a lord eating cake.

"The pools make the snow here really fluffy. It recycles the clean air as the clouds get trapped by the mountains here. We're lucky thread hasn't fallen recently. I was afraid it would be covered with blackdust." He turned back toward the valley, his smile staying but his eyes darkening as he took in the sight of the snowy mountain range that moved southeast. Miles away in those mountains was Telgar Hold, fed by the same mountain waters.

"Speechless!" Ilharen replied with an unusually broad grin as he turned to look down at H'win.

Masalath rumbled his agreement as he settled himself down belly to the ground to make it easier for his rider to dismount. It is fluffy! he confirmed joyously as he stuck his nose into the snow and huffed out heavily, sending puffs of it and a cloud of steam from his warm breath up into the air.

Ilharen was still staring around at the view as he fumbled at the buckles that secured him to Masalath's battle harness, cold and exhaustion had left his fingers clumsy but he managed eventually. Now, was he going to manage getting down? The exertion of flying in the winds of the Fall just passed would have left him - or in fact anyone - stiff and tired before and now.... Now he might need a little help.

"Ah, 'Win?" Ilharen tore his eyes away from the lovely view to look at H'win again, who to be fair was a lovely view in his own right. "Could y'help me down? I'm a bit..." He shrugged and laughed briefly, not quite sure how to end the sentence. He knew H'win felt guilt over how he'd been injured so he didn't like to draw attention to it but on the other hand he didn't want to be dishonest with his friend in the least, which left him in a bit of a tricky situation at moments like this.

The bluerider stared up at his friend, his eyes sparkling with joy. It was good to see Ilharen smiling, really smiling again. Ilharen spoke his name and H'win felt his heart skip. The look in Ilharen's eyes before his shrug took H'win's breath away and it took a moment for H'win to answer.

"Ah. Right." H'win was stiff and sore from the many hours of threadfighting, but it was nothing. He had forgotten the whole reason they were here - the healing properties of the baths. Setting the pack down in the snow, it sank slightly with the weight, but H'win abandoned it to climb up onto Masalath and reach for his friend.

Despite how far Ilharen had come with his healing, he would always be so dainty. H'win was able to scoop his arm around the brownrider and practically carry him at his side down Masalath's shoulder. If Ilharen were truly well, H'win would have jumped off the dragon and let them get lost in the cold fluffy snow to roll about like children. Instead, H'win settled for a careful step into it, making certain that as he stepped some of the snow would get kicked up at them, carried in a small fluff into their faces.

He hadn't expected H'win to climb up and half carry him down; Ilharen laughed again, this time in surprise and delight H'win stepped back down and set him on his feet, not without kicking snow up at them of course. In retaliation for H'win's powdery assault he pulled away, stooped slightly, and flicked a handful of snow in his friend's general direction. "Just testing how fluffy it is; and thanks," he said with a smirk and a wink.

Business before more fun though; Ilharen held a staying hand up to H'win in silent request and turned back to Masalath to free him from his harness. "I can't believe how much of the stuff there is," he said as he worked on the buckles; these of course were larger than the ones that secured him to the harness, and so much easier to work with. "It's all so... fresh, fresh and still. Peaceful. Like Pern taking a breath and just being, waiting. Course," he shot a glance at H'win and smirked again, "we can make it a deal less peaceful by messing around in it."

The handful of snow that flew at H'win dissipated before it could do any real damage but H'win sputtered and blinked anyway. He paused and held up his own hands in a temporary truce as Ilharen began to unbuckle Masalath.

"See how fluffy it is?" H'win asked carefully, his nose scrunched in disbelief. He bent down slowly and clumped some of the snow together in his still mercifully gloved hands.

"You have to pack it down to make it really useful." Deftly, H'win threw the small ball of snow up into the air, he caught it as it came back down. Messing up the pristine and peaceful valley would be too much fun and H'win couldn't resist the teasing way Ilharen smirked at him. He threw the ball of snow into the air and caught it again. Grinning foolishly in Ilharen's direction he put on his most exaggerated diplomatic voice.

"Here. First one is on me." H'win said as he underhand tossed the ball in Ilharen's direction and then dove with a big poof of more fluffy snow to make another ball really quick.

No sooner was Masalath's harness was removed and stowed safely out of the snow then H'win was tossing him a; "Snowball!" Oh, he had been looking forward to this. As H'win stooped to gather up more snow Ilharen hurled the packed lump at his shoulder and then dived for more ammunition of his own, the swift action made his side flare up with pain but he wasn't about to let that stop him from having fun! It'd been too long since he'd had real, honest, stupid, fun.

Ilharen must have been expecting it because as soon as H'win got another snowball made, the one he had tossed Ilharen's way crashed into his shoulder. H'win winced as the still fresh scar twitched and he made an undignified "Oofff" sound and popped his head back up out of the snow to toss the second snowball at his friend.

He intentionally missed, the ball soaring as fast as H'win could throw it right at Masalath. The impact against tough dragonhide exploded the snowball and sent a shower of snow down around where he was certain Ilharen had dived.

"Sorry!" H'win called in fake apology to Masalath and hunkered his bulk lower. The snow was only waist-deep in some places so he would be obvious to see unless he laid down completely, but that would ruin the game, and H'win wasn't yet ready to quit.

Masalath gave a little 'rrrp?' of surprise as the small projectile smacked into his side, and then the brown bugled and radiated the feeling of a laugh. Liar! he said happily, and then he swept his tail around to send a wave of snow sailing towards both riders. The brown was unfamiliar with the properties of snow however, it didn't go as far as water would and it all ended up dumped on Ilharen's head. Woops! Sorry!

Ilharen spluttered and shook himself; "Liar!" he declared, and then he hurled his second snowball towards the very obviously crouching H'win.

"What, me?" H'win pretended to be hurt by Masalath calling him a liar. It was true, and too much fun! H'win then burst into hysterical laughter, deep from his belly as Masalath tried to retaliate and only dumped snow onto his rider.

Doubled over in his laughs, H'win didn't see the second snowball coming. It crashed into the top of his head and sent cold snow down his collar. He jumped up and yelped, shaking the snow out of his coat by loosening his scarf.

Beramoth, happy to remain out of range lowered himself down into the snow to be as inconspicuous as possible. Which was impossible, a ruddy-hued blue dragon was very obvious in the pretty white drifts.

Recovered somewhat from getting snow into the warm confines of his neck, H'win bent back down to make another snowball. He rushed the production of this one and chucked it in Ilharen's direction, knowing it was a poorly made ball that would spin wildly. It was the thought that counts and H'win hunkered down again in wait for another attack.

H'win's next snowball hit Ilharen in the chest, the impact was hard enough to feel but it definitely didn't hurt. Snow, he decided, was good. Given he was already completely covered in snow, it was sliding down under his collar, he decided that he had nothing much to lose and tried to tackle H'win around the middle down into the snow. He knew it was a bad idea - he probably wouldn't even budge his much larger friend, and it would definitely hurt his side more - but he felt entitled to a few of those after five of being as careful with himself as though he were fine glassware. This might hurt but he wouldn't break, and it would be fun.

Ilharen jumped at him and H'win held his arms out to catch the other man and obediently fell backward at the impact. He knew the snow would catch him and the fall would be minimal so he made certain to situate himself so he would land flat on his back with another exaggerated "Oooff!".

It seemed like half of the snowy mountainside burst out from beneath them, scattering and showering down around them and atop them. H'win had to blink the snow out of his eyelashes and he laughed, pushing some of the snow off of his face and shaking his head to uncover it.

"Nice throwing, Ilha! It's like you've done it your whole life." H'win said breathlessly and he gasped for the air that got shot out of his lungs with Ilha landing atop him. If his friend were fully healed H'win would have tossed him back into the drifts but he let his head fall into the bank, accepting defeat.

Beramoth peeked up from his point to make certain the two of them were okay his eyes whirling with all of the excitement. No matter how calm he was, these sorts of activities were always contagious.

If things were just a little different this would be the perfect opportunity for a kiss. The thought was only a fleeting thing and it didn't dim Ilharen's smile as he rolled over and lay on his back beside H'win breathing hard and resisting the urge to curl an arm protectively around his throbbing side. "Thanks! It's not so very different t'throwing a ball, but y're not usually trying t'hit people with a ball." The sky above them was a beautiful azure, he felt as though he could lie here for hours watching the fluffy clouds drift overhead but if he didn't stand up soon then he'd stiffen completely and not be able to. Still, before that; "I can see why y'miss snow." Ilharen picked up a small handful and sprinkled it over H'win's face.

H'win was glad it was cold. He was certain his cheeks were already red with it and the snow, so when Ilharen rolled away, the blush that H'win could feel warming his cheeks and ears would go unnoticed. It was nice, especially in the cold to have his arms wrapped around Ilharen and holding him close. He stared up at the sky though, careful not to look at Ilharen. He wasn't sure he could see any joy or pain there. Looking over at his friend anyway, H'win couldn't stiffle his own fond smile.

Opening his mouth to reply, H'win got a mouthful of the snow that Ilharen dropped on him. "Ye do?" he asked before dousing Ilharen with his own handful.

"Next time, when your hip is better, we'll sled. The dragons can chase us then."

You're too slow to chase. Beramoth said to all of them as he bumbled through the snow toward the two men, trying to find them. He couldn't see them now that they were laying down and though he didn't mind, it was fun trying to spot them in the snow.

Leaning up so Beramoth could see the top of his head over the deep snow, H'win hollered back at the blue. "Not on a sled we won't be!"

Blue was certainly very pretty, but hazel was warmer and more complex; as he turned his head to look into H'win's chill-flushed face Ilharen's bright grin warmed and softened to a steady smile full of fondness. "I do," he confirmed as he brushed the snow off his face, "and sledding sounds perfect f'our next trip here, plenty of slopes t'try yeah?" There might be a certain amount of falling off, which was why it was probably better left for now.

Ah, but if we each had four very large sleds to stand on we could keep up! Masalath countered, periscoping his head up to peer over at the little huddle of human affection with sparkling eyes.

"Sledding dragons," Ilharen mused, chuckling softly as he tried to picture it. "Why can I see that ending badly?"

"I'm glad." H'win admitted. It was nice to share his favorite things with Ilha and he did miss snow terribly, though he could feel the cold seeping into his bones laying down as they were.

"Yeah. Next time." The smile on H'win's face wavered. There was always the fear that there wouldn't be a next time. That the next time they flew thread they would fall, but H'win did his best to keep the shadow of that fear from his eyes. He nudged Ilharen and carefully sat up to let Beramoth find them too.

We can sled on our bellies. We'll be just as fast! Beramoth said as he hopped into the immediate vicinity, sending another poof of snow into the air. H'win laughed at the idea of sledding dragons and at the cute display. He felt happy and he wanted to keep it that way.

"It's a race then!" H'win told the two dragons before he turned to look seriously at Ilharen and shrug. It was a terrible idea, but it was a fun one. They should do it, when they were all better.

A race! Team dragon versus team human, Masalath agreed, pawing thoughtfully at the snow and peering around at the slopes for what might be a good spot.

Ilharen sat up alongside H'win and gave him a friendly nudge along with a crooked little smile. "I'm not sure if this'll turn out hilariously, badly, or both. Can't deny them the chance to try t'best us though eh? I'm still sure we'll be the winners," he winked playfully, "but we can let them have a go."

The snow that had got down his collar from the wave Masalath had sent at him had melted now and stuck his shirt to his back, sending a biting chill down to his bones. "How about that hot water then?" Ilharen said as a shiver ran through his slight frame. "I'm about t'turn into an icicle here."

A fine team we shall make Masalath! We will show them. Beramoth sat up proudly in the snow. He was convinced the dragons would win sliding down the mountain as quickly as they could fly!

"Of course, we wouldn't want to spoil their fun." H'win laughed heartily. He knew they would beat the dragons down the slopes, but he could let them have a go as Ilha said. Composing himself H'win nodded and rose from the ground. He was also cold and the waters seemed a fine idea at this point.

Reaching down H'win helped Ilharen to his feet. He paused and struggled to pull off his soggy gloves. A small grin curled his cheeks upward at remembering how eager Ilharen had been when he had mentioned the gift. It was so long ago now - months just flew by faster than a flit sometimes!

"Better give this to you before we get into the water." His voice wavered like his smile had as H'win began unfastening his coat buttons to reach into the breast pocket. He had intended to give the token to Ilharen before threadfall, but he hadn't wanted to rush it. Now he was anxious though and wanted to make certain Ilharen had enough time to savor the gift before they shed everything to climb into the hot baths.

The hand to get to his feet was gratefully accepted, he could've managed but it would've taken longer and not been quite so dignified. "They deserve a chance t'mess around as much as we do," Ilharen observed as he brushed the worst of the snow off his shoulders and helmet but paused as H'win started to take off a glove - what was he doing that for?

Before he could ask the question H'win answered by his words and by reaching inside his jacket - he had returned H'win's brooch, and had Tor's pendant back in return, but his friend had promised him a token of his own. Suddenly his heart was beating fast in his chest again and a jolt of exhilaration ran through him, chasing away a little of the cold...

But H'win looked nervous.

Still grinning broadly Ilharen reached out to touch his friend's forearm and nodded at him everso slightly. "Whatever it is, I'll love it." It was from H'win, something he'd devoted stars knew how long to getting just right; that much thought on his behalf alone was precious regardless of what the physical object was.

His fingers were stiff with the cold, stiff from use and H'win was shaking a bit with nervousness, but he calmed a lot beneath Ilharen's slight touch. The gift was... too personal. H'win knew that. He knew he shouldn't have thought of it, and he knew he probably shouldn't be giving it now. If he were a lord still he never would have even given the idea a second thought, let alone bring it all the way to fruition. But... it was just too perfect. There was nothing else he could think of to give Ilharen. Ilharen always gave things with deep meaning, and H'win knew that broach was important in more ways than Ilharen would say. He wanted to give something that important in return.

Clumsy fingers found purchase on a small smooth item inside of his pocket. He paused again to look at Ilharen and smile, though it was still sheepish. He knew Ilharen would love it, and hearing him say it before he saw it was help, but the weight of the moment was sudden and H'win felt the cold snow on his neck and fingers evaporating. H'win thought that if he didn't say something he might vomit, the nervousness churning his stomach like a blizzard. Shells this was harder than it should be.

"Ah. Weel. I hope ye like it." The slight accent H'win let seep through sometimes overtook the short sentence he blurted out. Finally, as if the silly thing had been slipping just out of reach, he produced a small glinting item from his pocket. Between his thumb and forefinger H'win pinched a solid silver ring.

It had been his Telgar Seal ring. It shouldn't have taken him this long to get the adjustment of it complete, but he had dallied. He wouldn't wear the ring, not now that he was no longer a lord, but he hated the idea of his past completely going to waste in the bottom of his letter box. The gem-filled seal had been completely cut from the ring, Ilharen's fingers were much smaller so the loss of the extra silver wouldn't be missed. A new setting held a polished shining sandstone. The sandstone was exquisite with browns and reds gently swirling among pale creamy sand colors.

Oh.

It was better, far better than he could have imagined.

Ilharen's shock at the gift was plain to see on his face; his eyes widened, he drew in a breath and his lips parted slightly but it was clear that this was a good surprise for he reached out towards the ring in the same moment. "Oh 'Win, it's beautiful," he murmured, caressing the polished stone with his fingertips but not yet daring to take it from H'win. This was for him?

The silver gleamed cool and lovely as the snow around them, spoke of the north and the cold where H'win had come from.

The sandstone glowed warm and rich as the desert, spoke of the southern home they now shared.

After several still moments Ilharen looked up at H'win, his dark eyes were still wide but he was smiling now as warm and bright as Rukbat shone over Sirocco. "I don't know what to say. Thank you, I- I more than love it." Which finger was he supposed to wear it on? Shells! Did some fingers mean something in particular to northerners? He couldn't remember for the life of him, but probably whichever finger it fitted was fine.

With difficulty, H'win swallowed. He was suddenly thirsty and drenched in clammy sweat, and he felt nauseous and light-headed. His heart pounded in his chest and he was afraid to breathe, afraid it would be too quickly paced. Ilharen's reaction was perfect. H'win felt tears sting at the corners of his eyes. It meant... everything. It was H'win's past, solid, shining, lordly. It was his present, beautiful and striking, the desert. He may be uncertain of his future, but he could think of no one better to give it to.

"Ye do?" Elated, H'win's voice was but a whisper. He was so happy Ilha loved the gift. Another man may have reserved such a gift for a future wife, but H'win was no other man, and no other man had Ilharen. Truthfully, H'win didn't have him fully either, but what was the protocol in a weyr where tomorrow could be your last? It was foolish, H'win thought, to hope to find someone to spend the rest of his turns with when he didn't know how those turns would end. He knew that as long as Ilharen could though they would be together, and that was... well enough.

"I know it's not traditional fer men to give 'unother rings but I know ye'll keep it safe." No one else understood him the way Ilharen did. They wouldn't understand the significance of the ring, how it was everything H'win had lost and everything he had dreamed and everything he had gained. Ilharen would though and H'win was very happy with that. Above it all, H'win wanted Ilharen to have something solid to remember him by, in case they couldn't come back and sled in the snow next time.

"It should fit on yer third finger or the middle one. We had to guess from a set of one of your gloves." The weyr jewelers hadn't been pleased by H'win's less-than-accurate attempts at measurement, but he hadn't wanted to ruin the surprise. It was too good, especially now that he saw the aw-stricken surprise on Ilha's face.

"I do," Ilharen confirmed softly, taking the ring at last and pulling off his left glove so that he could test its on his middle finger; it was a good fit but as he regained the last of the weight he'd lost that might change, if so though it should fit the third finger just fine. It was perfect, perfect, and he had to swallow down a lump in his throat, this was.... This was unsaid words and expression that even if things could not be, they were felt. His heart felt as though it were clamped in a vice but in a good way and just at the moment his mind was giving him no words at all to pretty that feeling up with beyond the simple - perfect.

Swallowing again and blinking moisture away from his lashes Ilharen held his hand up before him to inspect the ring on his finger. "The present and future sit within the past, but they are not controlled by it." Was that what H'win had meant by it? It was how it seemed to him, perhaps because it was what he hoped for his very dearest friend. Let him be happy, and free.

Ilharen blinked again, cleared his throat and looked back at H'win, his deepest brown gaze intense now with unconcealed adoration. "I'll keep it safe, and y'know I don't mind tradition." Rings, secrets - he'd keep anything safe if it made H'win sound so glad. He still wanted the impossible but now more than ever what he did have made him happy and wasn't that enough?

"Good. I told you it would be worth the wait." H'win's smile grew. Like a taut cord cut, H'win felt the pressure in his chest release. Ilharen loved the gift. He understood. H'win knew Ilharen wanted more, but what more was there? H'win looked at Ilharen's hand with the ring. It was good to see it fit and H'win felt another dizzying turn of his heart. He felt as if he was spinning. He took Ilharen's hand in his and gave it a squeeze.

"Ah. I knew ye would." How easy would it be to kiss the slender knuckles? H'win remembered the night he had fled from his feelings on the ledge. He had kissed Ilharen's knuckles in goodbye to test himself. He could treat his friend with respect and admiration and love him from afar. Now though, with the adoring way Ilharen looked up at him, H'win was certain if he gave in at all even for the tiniest of moments, the mountain around them would fall and bury them in stone and snow.

"Now, before your fingers freeze solid, let's test the healing powers of the pools!" Ilharen was so slender, and H'win could feel the chill on his skin. It would be no good if he gave Ilharen his deepest token of affection to have the man die of cold. H'win felt happy. He could feel the darkness, the loneliness and the fear that clung to him far, far in the distance of his mind yet, but it was dimming with the bright and intense way Ilharen stared at him. Was it always so wonderful to be loved?

The heart-shuddering moment eased into something gentler and Ilharen's expression softened along with it, though the light in his eyes remained unchanged. "Y'did tell me that and I trusted you; y'still surprised me with how good it was though," he said as he squeezed H'win's hand in return. "And of course; my blood and my hand, as long as I breathe." He'd used the turn of phrase around H'win before in moments when he was deadly, fondly, serious but he wasn't sure he'd ever felt the words fill his heart as much as they did right now.

If they were to get to the warmth of the springs alas their hands must part; even if H'win did want to walk along holding hands the deep snow made Ilharen want both of his free for balance. "I can't wait t'find them," he said eagerly as they set off side by side. "It seems such a strange thing, such warmth blooming in such a chill place...." He trailed off there, smiled softly again at H'win and then added; "Or perhaps not so strange after all." H'win was many things, he even had a capacity for cruelty that Ilharen had never suspected 'til his love had clashed with Jass, but that did not dim how warm and bright he seemed in Ilharen's eyes. Water from the lovely warm springs would soon freeze cold and hard if moved from its comfort zone in the pool, would it not? What H'win needed, at least what he thought he needed, was a much bigger comfort zone.

For a moment, the chill of the air, the way they held hands and Ilharen's oath made H'win stare. It was... it was too much. H'win nodded, too moved to say anything of his own. The broach, and the ring and their said and unsaid promises were more than some people ever got. H'win didn't want the moment to end, he didn't want to think about what it meant, what it was like. He wanted to absorb the moment, take it in like a deep breath.

Could this be? What did it mean that H'win wanted all of his moments to be like these? Ilharen promised him more than anyone had ever promised him. He was closer than his own hand, more important that the very blood that pumped through his heavy heart. H'win couldn't say it. He couldn't say he would be there always because he couldn't promise something that might not happen. He wouldn't knowingly lie, but he wanted to. He wanted to be there, always. If he had been a lord... H'win cut that line of thought off immediately. If he had still been a lord he might have had whatever he wanted in life, but he wouldn't have met Ilha and he couldn't have had him anyway. H'win flushed, the twists and turns his thoughts were taking were absurd! Such a dreamer! Two men getting married in the mountains in the snow with only two dragons at witnesses? What scorching sun had H'win's head been burning under?

"I'll plow the way with my bulk. You follow behind." Turning away H'win picked up both of their bags, and he returned the small smile to Ilharen. Musing already? H'win was happy Ilharen seemed comfortable, that this situation was somehow normal. It helped him deal with it.

"The water comes from deep underground, hidden in the mountain." It was warm underground here in the north. The air and the height of the mountains is what made everything cold, but they hid so much beyond their stony facades. H'win felt a smirk forming and he turned and began stomping his way through the snow. Did Ilharen mean him?
