Ma.

Sure you've already read Pa's effusive letter, I'll keep it short.

We're here, I don't like it. You were right about all the rock. We've decided to stay all together, we've been given a large guest weyr near the top of the mesa. It's a shaffing long way down to get food but Pa says we're not to just have firelizards bring food, we have to socialise with these people.

He seems to be having fun. What a surprise.

Ilha's well, his dragon is massive and its his voice is stranger than I could have imagined even from your description.

It doesn't seem like talks will be quick, there's a lot of complicated things about a charter apparently. Why do these people feel bound to do what a fekking piece of paper tells them to? Seems like the bow to it even more than their Lords. Completely ridiculous.

Have to go now to socialise, hope the hunting's good.

Ma.

Well this is great! Nighteyes here to negotiate for Thread protection.

Pa thinks it's hilarious, resisted the urge to shake him. He says he's going to force their wherhandler Celessia to have polite drinks with him. I'll try not to let him get stabbed or poisoned or anything. I'll try not to do any of the above myself. Why does he find this funny??

Nevermind don't try to answer that.

I'll keep you posted, Pa and Lehara are writing to the council but I thought you'd appreciate a personal note.

Keep safe, love you all.

Ma.

Threadfall day, not that I need to tell you.

I watched Ilha and Masalath go up with Beta wing, their first Fall as wingriders. I've heard it said that a pair is lost most falls, I don't know if it's true or not. Even if I knew it wasn't I'd still feel sick thinking about all this.

I don't like feeling useless but I am in this and I can't change that.

I suppose this letter is useless too.

It'll be a long time yet before the Fall ends for the wings, they've Holds to defend as well as the Weyr itself, but with luck I'll write you with good news in a few hours; until then I'm going to get pissed with Pa. He's not smiling, for once.

The silence had been comfortable, both of them leaning back against Masalath's warm flank and his arm looped around Ilha's shoulders but he had to break it. He had to ask.

"Why did y'have leave us?" The question had been rattling around in his head for two and a half turns now, and he'd asked before but his brother had been evasive. Ilha was seldom evasive and almost never lied, perhaps largely because he was really awful at it. Knowing these facts as well as he did worried him, made him think that it was something he'd done.

"Again?" Ilharen's brows knit and he looked down into his cup of wine. "Why'd you keep asking? It's done now, and it was done f'the best. Me coming here made a bridge 'tween the Weyr and us..." The lithe man, trailed off, sighed and rubbed his face. "The Weyr and yous. Now mebbe there's a chance at a future f'the Daghar, and all the other groups too. If I'd not come that might not have happened, or it might not've happened so soon."

Red didn't believe it was for the best, not one of his own blood flying against the Thread and definitely not his dreamy baby brother. He grunted and took a deep swallow of wine. "Because it matters," he said succinctly, he didn't see any point in replying to what Ilha had added after the question itself. "Why won't y'tell me?"

"It's complicated."

"How?"

Ilharen tilted his chin up to meet Red's gaze, half opened his mouth but then closed it again and looked down again. His expression had spoken of sadness, pain, but it gave Red no real clues.

"Complicated," Ilharen repeated softly.

Red cursed internally, this was something to do with him then wasn't it? It was to do with- "I pushed hard f'you t'marry Essie." She would've been good for him, she was sensible and for all her mischief she saw the world as it was. She didn't waste time on horizons, on things that couldn't be, they would always have been a good pair but then she'd got that gold wher and.... It had just seemed so right, so perfect, and it would have given all of their kin more security for the future than they'd had before.

"Mmh." Ilharen sipped his drink again. "That y'did. It wasn't that though... least, not much that. That was just... just a tipping point I guess. If y're blaming y'self y'can stop."

Despite his earlier thoughts about Ilha's natural honesty Red couldn't make himself believe that was true, he'd been.... He'd not been the best of brothers over it all. Perhaps he never had been. All he'd wanted was- "I just wanted you t'be happy. Safe. Thought she'd give y'that." The two of them had been the best of friends, and couldn't that make for a contented relationship? But Ilha always wanted more, always reached for the clouds his foolish head was stuck in.

"She could've given me safe, but not happy." Ilharen shook his head, his brows pulling together again as he looked up at Red. "Y'd know that if y'knew me... Y'do know me, so I don't know why y'keep coming back t'the idea that I'd be happy t'settle in a marriage that was just convenient and," he waved his cup vaguely, "and comfortable. I need more than comfortable t'be happy Red. Anyway, like I said it wasn't really about that."

Wasn't about that. What was it then? Red grunted and groped for the jug to refill their cups. "Fine. Wasn't her, wouldn't've made y'happy. What was it then? Why're you hiding it from me?" Had he told Pa? Their sisters? Maybe everyone knew but him. Maybe it was about him, not the Felessi thing but something else he'd done to drive his brother away. He'd never meant to do that. He knew he'd been critical sometimes but Ilha could be so-! But he'd never meant for him to go; he'd always wanted his brother to be a bit more grounded, to have more realistic goals, to focus more on the mundane common good than big ideas, but he loved him.

"Complicated," Ilharen repeated, his usually placid tones carrying an edge now as he reached up with one hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Can y'just leave it Red? It was something I had t'do, and it's done. Can we just drink and talk about something else, or not talk at all? I don't.... I can't go into it. I've too many thoughts, too many feelings, and all of it... I can't explain it to you. Not right now." When he finished speaking Ilharen exhaled slowly and took a deep drink of his wine, his head ducked too much for Red to see his expression.

Red ran his tongue over his lips and gave his brother's shoulders a squeeze. "Right. A'right. But... Another time?" He didn't understand why Ilha wouldn't tell him if it wasn't his fault somehow. Shame? But he seemed to feel no shame at leaving at all. Shame for the reason? But what reason could make him-? Agh! Cursed, complicated, cloudy idiot.

A sigh escaped Red's lips and he bent to press a kiss to the top of his brother's head. "Or not, if y'like. I just want to understand."

Ilharen sighed and shifted so that his head rested on Red's powerful shoulder. "I know y'do Red and... Yeah. Sure. Another time. When I've got my thoughts t'gether. For now though?" He raised his cup and waggled it lightly, inviting a toast.

Feeling as though he'd done something wrong, or at least not done something right, Red clicked his cup against Ilharen's and gave him another gentle squeeze. "Yeah. For now."

They were shut inside and his heart was racing. He felt sick, frightened, and angry because there was nothing he could do. He hadn't wanted Jass' company, nor Nessa's, not anyone's. A turn ago yesterday was happening again right now up in the sky somewhere, and everything would probably be fine but-

A noise made his already frantic heart do an extra jump in his chest and Red spun around to find the source of the little sound, his muscles twanging.

When he saw it Red relaxed but frowned a little. "Oh, why'd y'do that?" Amber had made her nest in a basket suspended from a hook in the ceiling, eight eggs she'd had but now one of them - green with a yellow band around the middle - lay shattered on the floor below. Red rubbed his eyes, shook his head and turned away to find things to clean up the fallen egg with. "Hope Ilha has a better day than that 'un," he muttered to nobody.
