Thaddeus as spotted the two sneaks quite quickly but had not known what to say or if he should say anything. But then he was saved from needed to decide by Baru the squawking of the blue firelizard.

As he waited for the axe to drop upon Raelero and Renkestuous he adjusted his sack making sure that is sat comfortably across his shoulders and down his back.

It was then that he heard Baru say that whoever beat Raelero and Renkestuous would be able to finish sooner and he was tempted to make the attempt. Rather one hard push and an early finish than a slog for who knows how long. But then again, he knew that while fit from the farm work this was something else and didn't really want to wake up the morrow unable to move. He also wasn't that good a runner, never had speed, just simply the ability to jog along for a longer than most.

With a sigh of indecision, Thaddeus readied himself at the starting line and took off at a gentle jog when Baru yelled go! Quickly overtaken by the vast majority of candidates pushing themselves to be the first across the lines he eased up his pace slowly, testing where his limit was with the added weight of the sack. Slowly catching up pace wise to the other candidates.

Fae has been content to simply jog beside Vatyin, acting as a personal buffer against anyone who would have tried to start anything with the younger man. She wasn’t the most keen on him getting special treatment for being the Weyrwoman’s son, but he also did it seem to be demanding said treatment, so she also didn’t want him targeted because of it. It wasn’t his fault who his mother was.

And then Baru was calling them to gather their sacks and line up. She followed to do just that, but was slightly taken off guard when she went to heft her sack up. It was far heavier than she would have imagined. Not wanting any of the other candidates to try and help her, she put her mind to it and managed to get it balanced over her shoulder and across the center of her back. How some of the other candidates were managing two sacks was beyond her. She also hated that it made her stoop, interrupting her perfect posture.

And then two candidates were shooting forward. She had barely managed to get herself on the line before they were off and she arched a brow at them. Thankfully, Baru noticed the cheaters and made a game of it. Beat them and only do one lap. Well then, she could certainly try for that!

On Baru’s mark, she took off. Well, she tried. It was more of a lurching start, to be perfectly honest. Racing with firestone sacks was much more difficult than she would have liked. She pushed forward, however. She was going to beat them. She was not doing more than this one strenuous lap!

Soleil watched Raelero and Renkestuous take off with no change in her expression. On the inside, however, she was rolling her eyes at the pair of them. To be perfectly honest Raelero probably needed that little bit of a head start, though she didn't know enough about Renkestuous to say if he needed the same. Nor did she care all that much, honestly.

Mikal earned himself an inner eyeroll too. He was muscular and looked like he could handle the weight but she privately thought that that kind of showing off was going to come back and bite him in the ass. If she were being honest with herself she kind of hoped it did, though she didn't wish to see him injured.

Baru's challenge had Soleil turning a cool gaze on the assistant candidate master - the only sign of eagerness she had shown during this whole thing. Once the mark was given she took off, her grip on her firestone sack even and sure. It seemed as though most people were attempting to shoot out in front right off the bat, but that wasn't her tactic. It was a race, yes, but there was distance involved here. It wasn't an out and out sprint.

She settled herself into an easy, ground-eating lope, easing her way around a couple of slower candidates without batting an eyelash. Once she got closer to the finish line then she could break away and sprint for it, but for now her pace was one she knew she could maintain for a rather long time.

A part of Rae was relieved that he wasn't in but so much trouble for running ahead. Yet. Another part of him wondered what would happen if he could keep ahead of everyone. If he could stay ahead, would he be allowed to stop after the first lap? It wouldn't hurt to try, at least! And perhaps, if he could keep at a good pace, he'll be completely forgiven. Well, he would certainly try!

Rae squeaked as Lord tried his best to seemingly distract him. And his best was actually pretty efficient. Especially since the bronze got Monster going, and instead of trying to help his Person, the blue launched himself up in the air and starting doing the same thing as Lord, seeing it as a type of game. A game that Rae was certain to lose.

"Ack! Lorux! Your beast is a bad influence! Monster, get on somewhere, will you?!" He couldn't help but laugh as he tried to wade his way through wings and tails. He couldn't swat at the two, given that he was holding his firestone sack and that he didn't want to hurt the pair. How was he supposed to try and outrun his opponents with two flits in his way?

And then he had an idea. He took a treat out of his pocket and tossed it to the side. Monster chirped and dove after it. "Yeah, I have some for you too," he told Lord, tossing another treat in the same direction, hoping to distract him long enough to leave the two behind. And to give him a moment to readjust the sack that he was starting to lose hold of, thanks to grabbing those treats...

Having oh so recently come of the age to join the candidate ranks Veres had wanted to show that she belonged here among them, to them, the candidatemasters, and herself. There had been no thought of not giving the race her best shot. Sure she had never believed that she could win it, the others all had much more practice lifting and carrying the awkward bundle that was the heavy sack resting against her back. Okay not ALL the others, maybe not even most of them but still. It was also no surprise that some decided to show off and carry a second sack. (Here's looking at you Mikal - you don't get to go unnoticed and judged.) Then the directions were added to try to beat the two that had started early so you could get an early end to the run, with the bonus of watching the rest to see who all managed to do so.

The call to go had her off running, cautiously for the first few steps as the added weight bounced against her and she learned to compensate for it, then faster. She was built well for a run and gained speed enough to see if there was any chance at all she might overtake the two troublemakers, before slowing just a tiny bit to keep from tiring too quickly. It was still more than a jog, and faster than what would be practical for a long distance. If it looked as if she would be going for more than a few laps she could easily slow to a more maintainable speed.

The firelizards attempt at distractions was amusing, but Veres saved the breath that wanted to escape in a laugh at the antics. It hadn't crossed her mind to try and cheat, not that she could, besides it might actually have ended with Rae and Ren ending up with an advantage if any of the stone fell from the sacks. The bags would lighten and it might trip up those behind. It was both a good idea and a bad one to set the flits on the pair. No she'd beat them with skill, not tricks.

Ah, not a set number of laps then. Not at all as they were told that the goal now was only to finish before Raelero and Renkestuous. That was an interesting proposition. Others here were more fit than she was and she knew it. Others liked running much more than her as well. But she knew better than to just not try, it would have just been called out. As Lorux sent the firelizards after the misbehaving pair it crossed her mind to call Risa too, she'd have to make sure to compliment him on the idea later, though the flit was much too young to be the best listener yet so the idea was discarded as quickly as it popped in. No she'd have to think of something else instead. As she ran with the sack carefully balanced so as not to jostle too much or risk losing the contents she thought. What could she do that wouldn't actually be cheating but may slow at least one of them down?

Hmmm, well there was one idea that came to mind but it could so easily come back to bite her later on was it really worth it? Eh why not, besides the odds of it even slowing him at all were slim to none anyway. So as she came close enough to be in Rae's line of sight, she made sure to look over at him and smile as she ran. It was an amused and slightly flirty smile, one that would almost never cross her lips under normal circumstances as she seldom had occasion to flirt at all. She could always hope later that if he even noticed it, and especially if he took it for more than the attempt to distract that it was, he'd believe when she explained it was only a compliment about his spunk. Which she did enjoy, she knew few who would so blatantly risk annoying the candidate masters. It wasn't like she could REALLY flirt with him while running, she wasn't even willing to risk casually brushing against him as most likely both would end up toppling over as the sacks collided instead. But it was the best she could come up with right now, and best to do it before they were all drenched in sweat from the heat of the desert, lessened at least by the current location, and the activity.
