Wherlings are now 9 months old. They will be showing a propensity toward their favored specialty. Today we'll be testing the basics of hunting, sniffing out things, checking burrows etc. Everyone will have instructed in the basic use of knives and all are required to carry one for this lesson. It is difficult of course for the handlers to see, but Mirina carries a shaded glowbasket that illuminates around her dim light for about fifteen feet.

Guard handlers are welcome and encouraged to aid in this event!

Assistant Wherlingmaster Mirina stood at the edge of the great door to the desert just outside of the Weyrhandler's barracks. The Whers were getting too large to ride the lift as one so their time upon the weyrbowl was at an end. Today's lesson was to instruct them on teaching their whers to hunt, as most grown whers were capable of getting their own food in the desert.

Mirisk found this to be his favorite lesson and he was standing next to Mirina, nearly shivering with excitement while she gave her instructions.

"Today's main lesson will be the basics of hunting. This is to help determine if you and your wher are more likely to become guards or protectors and to help your wher become familiar with the desert and hunting so mating runs - which are coming up quickly - do not come as a major shock..." Mirina spared a glace for the greenhandlers among them before continuing.

"Because this can be dangerous, we're going to need to go as a group. Mirisk and I, or the other handlers will signal if it is okay for your wherlet to approach. We will be looking for scent trails and small snake burrows. Do not let your wherlet chase off after anything tonight. The dangers of the desert are immense, especially to the young and small. Please rely on myself or the other handlers as we go!" With her instructions given, she signaled and she and Mirisk turned and walked through the open door out into the desert.

Mirisk rushed ahead and into the darkness beyond, his bronze hide glinting in the low light of the moon, snout down and taking in big snuffling whiffs. Even in the dark, no one would question his whereabouts for the stomping monstrosity's racket seemed to echo against the emptiness of the night.

Listening to the Temporary Assistant Wherlingmaster was always a chore and a boring one in Lani's opinion. She was so shy and so clipped, she barely spoke more than absolutely necessary, and almost entirely about whers. He flipped his knife back and forth between the back of his hand and his palm, the small blade glinting in the low light of the small covered glowbasket Mirina held.

When the candidatemaster turned Lani looked to his side where Nisk stood quietly. If she were not so big, she could have been invisible, Lani thought, her dark hide blending with the darkness easily. Her head was turned away from the glowbasket and her inner and outer lids closed against the light. He patted her on her harsh lumpy side. It was hard to believe she had grown so big from something so small once and he had not missed Mirina's hint that she would soon be running. She would soon be fully grown.

"Go'un, git ye wee lump. Stay close, in front of the glow will ye?" He shoved her again and pushed his knife into his belt. It wouldn't help much against a fully grown snake, or a wild wher, but Lani, though always the nervous type felt safe with the hoard of whers they had with them today. Where a caravan couldn't go with this many whers! He turned and grinned at the other new handlers while Nisk padded silently into the darkness and just out of their immediate vision as if she was one with the darkness.

"Diss it! Ye think thell take to it like dragons to the sky?" Dragons were supposed to fly and sear thread from the sky. Didn't that mean whers were supposed to run, to hunt and destroy?

Night time! It was blessing for his skin but a curse for his vision. Oiosk was getting much better at sharing his senses but much better was very relative, the young wher was still easily distracted and prone to fuzzy-ness at very inopportune moments.

So it was that as Oiosk sniffed around excitedly, keen to overcome the night's challenges, Koios moved carefully over to the familiar shape of Lani and cleared his throat. "Would you mind if I had a hand on your shoulder? I can't see very well even with the glow." His classmates were used to him and his, to put it mildly, less than perfect vision by now but he tried hard not to burden anyone in particular with too many requests.

"Aye! Ye ken I dun mind." Lani patted himself on the left shoulder though to indicate that's the side Koios should reach out for. He might actually need his knife tonight and he was far keener on the right than he was his left.

"Dun worry Koios. Nun o' us canny see yonder tha glows." It was dark, dark as between Lani suspected. Well - mayhaps not, he could occasionally see the glinting of big wher eyes all around them when they caught shimmering from the glows. They were like living stars, and everyone knew there was nothing living between.

Nisk sniffed beyond the glows, and she padded near Oiosk to inspect what he might have found. Realizing it was little to nothing, she turned and ran soundlessly after Mirisk. The older wher had a much more expert way of staying far enough ahead so his vision would not be hampered by the glowbasket his handler carried. Nisk thought that was clever, and she would learn it too!

"Thank you," Koios smiled and placed his hand on Lani's shoulder, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You have one up on me, I can hardly see my feet!" It would be a real blessing when he could trust Oiosk's eyes reliably again, wher vision was very strange - it had taken him a long time to get used to it with Koisk - but it was worth it for the serious enhancement to being able to see where on Pern he was going.

"Go on Oiosk," Koios said, giving his brown a nudge as he sensed him still nearby, "don't you want to join the hunt!"

Oiosk, who very much did, grunted as he realised he'd been left behind and quickly lumbered after Nisk on his thick stumpy legs.

"What's it like?" Lani asked curiously, quiet so not everyone could hear as he looked to @Koisk.

"Not seein, but seein through him?" The trader couldn't imagine it. Nisk tried to share the way she saw things, but Lani failed at it too often. Now the wherlet shared mostly feelings with him. General ideas and suggestions pressed upon him like smoke. She could see what she could, and he could see what he could and they constantly communicated the area. Rock. Human. Good. Simple things, but Lani had given up trying to make sense of the blurry sight a wher and their colors they saw.

Once Oisok caught up Nisk ran in a careful circle around him playfully. Did he see her in the dark? Their humans could not, so they could surprise them if they worked together? Yes. Nisk would love to surprise the handlers! Would Oiosk like that more than their hunt? Nisk pressed her inquiry against the brown. Did he want mischief or to do as he was told?
