He'd been so busy trying to get to the end of the course without falling on his face he hadn't noticed Rae start to topple, it was only when he heard his friend yelp that he realised something was up.

Now excused himself Lorux quickly dumped his sack out of the way of the others and jogged back towards Rae, keeping in the middle of the course not on the track where people were running.

"Alright?" he asked, breathing hard and holding a hand out to Rae to help himself up with. "I know you're a hungry bugger but eating the ground's a bit much!"

His knees felt like they were trying to fuse together and a pointy lump of firestone was poking into his shoulder but Vatyin was still pleased with his progress, he wasn't falling further behind and he was confident that he could keep going for some time yet. Raelero's fall came as - well not a shock actually, but by the time Vatyin drew near he was sitting up so he obviously wasn't too hurt. Shells though, he did have to run another lap? Vatyin shifted his grip on his sack and pressed on around the course once more, slowing as Baru instructed but not stopping.

He'd been trying to get to the front just to be onery, but with the flits and everything only five people being dismissed was pretty good. He no longer had that bit of fun, but he was surprised by Baru telling them to slow down. Doing a strange little dance, he tried to turn around without slowing down and promptly fell on his rear.

"Oi, Raelero, you all right?" he asked as he popped back up to his feet and hoisted his sack again. He only waited a little for a response, and quickly was on his way again. He wanted to keep his lead, after all!

She couldn't believe she was so far forward in the group ... and she stumbled to an awkward stop as she saw Raelero go down. "Are you okay? Can I help?"

And never mind that she should keep running; she wanted to help out more than she wanted to 'win' a race of any sort! Talli let her sack slip a little, her attention on the injured party.

Mikal slowed down for a moment - just a moment - dropping the second bag. Everyone seemed to be slowing down to check on Raelero. He would've stopped as well - the other boy was probably the closest he had to a friend - but with so many checking on him...

Well, Mikal wasn't the type to not take advantage of a situation like this. Offering Rae a smirk, he continued to jog on, this time with one bag instead of two. It let him move a little faster at least.

Veres had only been half paying attention to the candidates in front of her, they were really only of concern if she had gotten close enough to have a chance at passing them. At least until one of them overbalanced himself. The fall of her feet slowed at the command from Baru though she didn't stop completely. If they were to continue running, which as she wasn't excused since she hadn't beaten either of the two that had attempted to cheat should be the case, it would be much more difficult to resume from a full stop as some others would be doing. Muscles sill were given break for a few moments as it became almost a walk instead of the quick jog that had been settled into, helpful if it looked as if a short sprint might pull her ahead next time around. There would be more laps but hopefully she could still manage to leave Raelero and Renkestuous behind her soon enough. The first would likely be easiest as to continue he had to both get back off the ground and retrieve his firesack. She doubted that Baru would simply let him go just because he fell, especially as he didn't actually seem injured. The scrape on his cheek didn't count really. Not that she wasted the breath to ask over his health, others were already doing so besides she only saw a little blood and he wasn't screaming in agony.

Mikal's actions didn't go completely unnoticed either. She couldn't fault him for not wishing to continue with the second sack, she could for having taken it in the first place as that was purely showing off but not for dropping it. Apparently he wasn't fond of being dead last. None of that mattered though as she didn't plan on letting it impact her own trip around the track.

Rae was quite relieved when Soleil had approached and offered to take him to see the healers. He had also been relieved to hear that she was one of the ones who had finished before him and was therefor excused from the exercise. It meant that not only would she not be angry at him because she had to do numerous laps, but also that she wouldn't be sacrificing the lesson to help him. And the fact that she was offering to help him meant a lot to him.

"I think I'm okay," he started to Baru, but turned his attention to his friend. "But you're probably right. My cheek is starting to throb and give me a headache, so better safe than sorry, right?"

It was then that he noticed a good number of candidates were starting to form a ring around him. He chuckled at Lorux's joke and gave him a mock rude gesture, one that he was certain his friend would take in the way it was intended. He was able to give Renkestuous a thumbs up before the other lad was racing off, and flashed a smile at Tallian. "Thanks lovely," he told her with a wink, his usual humor still apparent despite his injuries. "I think Soleil will have me to the infirmary and patched up in no time, so no worries. Go try and beat Ren, that scamp, so that you can maybe be excused sooner."

He pulled himself up then, his cheek aching more at the slight change in altitude, and he winced. It was about that time that he watched a figure go by, still at almost high speed, slowing only to drop off one of the two sacks they were carrying. And then he saw it. The smirk. The smirk on MIKAL's face as he raced by. Anyone else may have been offended by the other man's actions, but Rae saw the humor in it. Not only because he genuinely liked Mikal, but because he couldn't fault him for trying to get ahead in a sneaky manner. After all, he was the one who had started it all by trying to sneak a headstart.

It was lucky that she was actually in decent shape as it appeared that there were going to be more laps in the very near future. Not that that came as a surprise to Kyrellah, she knew that there were others here both faster and more fit than she herself was. It was disappointing to have not gained any real ground though. But that was why she had tried to pace herself rather than just run for all she was worth. Either way would have ended with there being more times around the track than just the one. This way at least she wasn't in danger of her legs giving out beneath her as they slowed when Raelero inevitably gave in to the demands of gravity and ended up face first. It was very nearly a complete stop that she came to, even if it was for only a moment or two as it was half expected to have it become a pile up of people instead of only the one on the ground.

As she passed a grin was spared for Raelero, one much more in tune with the joking mood before the race had begun than the failure that was her attempt at distraction after it had started. She didn't ask how he was or offer assistance, there were enough around him that she would be in the way even if she had planned on it, she did consider however having Risa check on him. An idea that was passed over as quickly as it came, his legs were still attached and clearly hadn't fallen off as he'd said they would so he didn't need a firelizard to help him take them to the healers. And as Baru hadn't told them to stop she could assume he wasn't actually hurt, in anything but pride anyway.

Just as she had thought - twenty other people (in her rough estimation) had stopped to help Raelero as well. Lorux got a frosty nod while everyone else was patently ignored. As the other candidate assured his many well-wishers that he was fine, Soleil's eyes focused on MIKAL. On the sneaky way he dropped one of the two firestone sacks he had picked up. Instead of calling attention to what he'd done and the way he had zoomed forward to try and take the lead she turned her eyes back to Raelero.

"Yes," she said simply. A headache could be an early sign of a concussion. Then again, it was also a symptom of running your face into a rock, so it could just be nothing. She hoped for his sake that it was nothing.

Soleil watched with a cold, assessing eye as Raelero got up off the ground. His wince was noted, and before anyone else could delay them with more comments, she gestured towards the entrance of the cave. "We should go."

Talli blushed at Raelero, smoothing the hem of her shirt over her hips and clearing her throat awkwardly. The flirt! Too tongue-tied to respond, the fair-haired Candidate adjusted her sack on her shoulder and took off again, leaving Raelero in Soleil's care.

The sack was heavy, and the weight managed to serve as a slight distraction from having been flirted with, but only a slight one. It was not near enough to keep Tallian from wondering how casual those words had been and being all around uncomfortable with not knowing whether those flirtatious words had any substance to them.

Baru looked down at Raelero, a frown pinching her forehead in an ugly wrinkle, she knew, but as long as she was frowning the candidates wouldn't be able to tell if it was in anger or concern. Still frowning, Baru sniffed in slight humor at Raelero's compliment.

"Next lesson I'll show you how to throw the sacks instead of yourself." The young candidatemaster promised Raelero, her tone loud enough for everyone else to hear. Her frown wavered though at the realization that the young man was okay and more than capable of joking.

"You also still have your tongue I see." Baru joked back, her tone an obvious mock complaint as if it were a shame the young troublemaker hadn't bit his tongue clearly off in his spill. With the fun of the lesson dying down as some of the candidates finished and others slowed at her command, Baru waved her hand at those candidates still holding sacks and answered Thaddeus's question.

"We'll call the race there. You can put all of those down. Those of you that didn't win can help me put them away." Leaning down, Baru helped Lorux lift Raelero gingerly to his feet as if he weighed no more than the firestone sack she had just tossed. Her eyes locked on Soleil and Baru gave a tilt of her chin to direct the woman to come forward.

"Mind his elbow will you too?" She said to both Soleil and Lorux watching Raelero sway some and flinch at his pain.

"If he has a concussion, the steps to the infirmary might pose dangerous." Hastily, Baru swiveled her head around to see if there would be any other volunteers to help and she nodded to indicate that someone else could join them as Ralero wasn't steady on his feet.

"A third person should go with Lorux, and Soleil as they guide Raelero to the infirmary. You'll need to walk behind and make sure if they can't support him, he doesn't fall back down the steps." Baru commanded, hoping for volunteers.

"The rest of you can stay and help me clean up these sacks!"

"Better safe would've been better about a minute ago mate," Lorux pointed out jovially to Raelero with a lopsided grin as he steadied his balance for him, he didn't think he was that hurt but it would be better to have a healer check all the same.

When Soleil nodded at him Lorux flashed her a brief smile, sounded like it was all over for everyone else too now! "They'll have to thank you later," he muttered under his breath to Rae so that nobody else except maybe Soleil would be able to hear. When Baru called for another volunteer Lorux turned to Renkestuous, still smiling his usual bright crooked grin as he jerked his head at the entrance. "You helped kick off this mischief, help us sort it out mate?" Ren knew the steps as well as any of them, and he'd be strong enough to help if Rae did topple backwards and he couldn't say that of all of the candidates present today.

"T'was on accident too, for once!" Ren complained, but he could hardly put up a fuss about being suggested for less work! Not that gathering up sacks of firestone was much hard work, really. "Aye, I'll go behind and make sure Raelero doesn't wind up with another knock to his noggin."

He bounded over, all long legs and wiry strength, presenting himself to Baru for the duty that @Lorax had suggested him for. At her approval as far as Renkestuous was concerned he could get the party a-moving on, although he supposed @Soliel was up to take the lead. Didn't make him no nevermind.

So the race was actually over, Veres let her jog fall off to a simple walk. She had no intention of letting her muscles stiffen by a sudden stop. As those that had volunteered (or been volunteered) began the trek to the infirmary she moved to place her sack back in its place. The weight fallen from her shoulders left her shaking her arms out, loosening them up a moment before the ones tasked with returning the empty mine to order. There was no issue with that, she had lost and since they were all allowed to stop running there was no way it could have been over that easy. Not that she'd been a candidate long enough to really have experience with that, or with Baru's ways. At least she hadn't come in last. Of course she'd wanted to win, but middle of the pack was better than being behind everyone else. Perhaps if she thought about it long enough she could even be happy with her placement, placing first might have meant a target on her back from some of the more unforgiving of her fellow classmates. Really though she HAD wanted to beat those that had tried to cheat. The competitive side of her promised itself that if given the opportunity again she would. For now though she settled to lifting and moving sacks back into their places.

The grin that Kyrellah had given Rae grew as they were told the race was over. The face plant that he had taken wasn't the proper way to finish a lesson, but she could at least be thankful to him that it had. There had been no looking forward to further running. Okay she still had to help clean up, but that could be done at a much more comfortable pace. She didn't volunteer to help him to the infirmary, he had enough of them there for that and they were ones he seemed to know well. If she thought about it she might check on him later of send the little green flit to anyway, she was trying to train the creature and it might be a good exercise for her.

Her own sack was quickly dropped off before she moved back to help place those that had been carried by the excused candidates where they belonged. The quicker that they could finish the chore the quicker they could relax too and find a way to cool off. Thankfully most of the heat right now was from the activity and not the temperature that resided in the higher parts of the Weyr.

Jaros had been setting his sack down at the spill and had come over to check everything was alright. He didn't tend to hold a grudge, so now that the troublemakers had been taught a lesson, he was more than willing to help out.

Happy to see that Raelero was being taken care of, he gathered some of the sacks and started piling them back up, carrying them two at a time without too much issue, as he doubted the infirmary group could carry theirs during the trip. It took a few trips but he soon had them piled neatly at the side of the room.

He was pretty pleased that a good number of the group had shown they were more than capable of doing something like this. They would be relying on each other in the upcoming months and he made a note to keep an eye on the ones who had done well, mainly Faelyn, Kaya, Lorux and Soleil. It was never a bad idea to know who the most reliable group members were.

With Lorux and Soleil gone, he made sure to stop and congratulate both Faelyn and Kaya as he carried the sacks.
