Metal Weyrlings are approximately 13 months! They've been practicing between for about a month!

The day was hot, and Tess looked odd, standing in the weyrbowl beside Clarith. She was wearing heavy clothes, including a riding jacket more suited to Telgar than to Sirocco. She'd told her weyrlings to dress similarly.

Beside her, Clarith snorted and lowered her head to peer at Tess.
Why must we go north? It's winter there!

[i[You hardly remember winter, my love,[/i] Tess said, squinting up at the sun. It would be early in the day at High Reaches--enough time for them to get to know the area. She was glad for Sirocco's friendly terms with High Reaches.

You remember it,
Clarith said, though Tess knew she was only bickering for the sake of it. She could tell that the dragon was glad to get out of the Weyr, and to stretch her wings. Besides, it would be the first time these weyrlings saw snow!

When the weyrlings gathered round, Tess called them to attention. "I'm glad to see you've all taken my advice and dressed warmly," she began. "It will be especially useful when we go to visit High Reaches!"

She raised a hand to silence any mutterings. "You've been learning to fly between for a month now," she continued. "And you've gotten to know the area around Sirocco rather well in that time. But there is a whole world out there to see, and it's important that you know what it looks like, from more than just images from Clarith or Voroth." She sent R'sol a grin at that. He was actually from High Reaches, and he surely knew those mountains well.

"Mount up now," she said, turning her attention back to the weyrlings. "R'sol and I will check your straps, and then you'll receive the location from Clarith and Voroth. Your dragon'll share the image with you, and then check back with us the be sure it's correct! And you'll not go till I give the signal."

Tess was firm on that. There were few things worse than losing weyrlings to the cold nothingness of between. Clarith's agreement was emphatic in the back of her mind, and Tess patted her gently. She thought of Kythe and Phobeth and grimaced. No, she would teach her weyrlings to be careful.

Eventually, everyone was settled and with a wave of her arm, Clarith leapt into the air. You have the image? she asked of her own dragon.

I do!

And the weyrlings?

Ready!

Then, with a wave of her arm, she led them between.

After a few breaths, they came out above the frozen High Reaches mountains. The morning sun was out, shining weakly over the snowy clearing. Tess knew that it had snowed in the night, and she wouldn't be surprised if it snowed again later in the day--but for now, there was plenty of time to get the lay of the land before they returned to the Weyr. She nudged Clarith, who was circling lazily downward.

Take some time to see the land from above, note the mountains and the valleys,
Clarith told the weyrlings.
And once you've done that, we'll land and look around on foot.

Welcome to the Metal Weyrling's lesson on between/fun field trip! The purpose of this particular lesson is to visit somewhere new, so that weyrlings will have a clear picture in their minds when going between. It is part of an effort by the Weyrlingmasters to help weyrlings acquire real-world experience in flight, and to expose them to different places on Pern.

Weather conditions are as follows: cold and clear, with soft powdery snow and icicles along the rocks. It's before noon, so the sun is low in the sky. For now, there is only a little breeze, but if you looked to the west, you might see clouds gathering in the distance. Will it begin snowing again? Who knows?

Weyrlings are welcome to wander around--though not too far! Stay in sight of Clarith and Voroth!--but remember that IC actions = IC consequences! That is: if you throw a snowball at Clarith, she's gonna plop you into a snowdrift! ;)

Why do you look like you're wearing everything you own? Margoth asked, cold amusement rolling through the icy waves of his mind. Jass looked down at herself, then laughed and thumped Margoth gently on his neck.

Tess told us to dress warmly today. If you'd pay attention you'd hear why, she teased, enjoying the rare attempt to needle at her dragon. It didn't do much - the bronze just rumbled softly and fixed his eyes on the Weyrlingmaster and her assistant. Or, rather, he fixed his eyes on Clarith and Voroth. All of the images they had used during their lessons on going between so far had come from those two. Besides, he picked up on everything Tess was saying anyway, he just wasn't looking at her.

Jassara fought the urge to roll her eyes and focused on what the instructions were for their lesson that day. The information that they were actually going to High Reaches made her whoop with joy. They were going somewhere that was properly cold! The oppressive heat of the bone-dry season Sirocco was in would be escaped for a while!

SNOW!

Margoth rumbled again and pressed his mind against Jassara's, trying to calm her excitement a little bit. They still had a lesson and a task to do, after all. Despite his admonitions she could feel his own excitement. He'd heard her talk about snow before and was curious about it, but more than that, he was looking forward to playing in it with Arumth and Ladijath. Not that he would "play", of course - that didn't look dignified - but he was excited none the less.

They received the image of where they were going, and just before Tess lifted her arm to signal them all off, Margoth turned his head and gently nudged Arumth. Jass, meanwhile, turned her head to the opposite side and grinned broadly at Red, miming throwing a snowball at him as Margoth launched into the air. The trip between always made Jass hold her breath, and though she hated it, Margoth's steady presence kept her focused.

When they burst through the air above she let out another whoop. Even Rukbat's glare bouncing off the snow and right into her eyes couldn't stop her from drinking in the view. Mountains! Snow! Home. Sapphire Hold wasn't too far away from where they were. It was tempting to skip the lesson and pop off to see her father, but even she wasn't that reckless. That visit could be had another time.

We've seen enough, dearheart. Go ahead and land and we'll take a look about on foot, she said. Margoth folded his wings neatly and came in to land.

Keltin was already growing warm from all the layers in the desert sun, but he didn't mind it thanks to the excitement of what lay ahead. Thanks to his excitement, Pryka and Tylin were more vocal and excitable than usual. The brown was actually up and doing circles with his green sister, as opposed to lazing about on his Person's shoulder. Eluth, Keltin could feel, was also excited, but he kept up his cool, dependable exterior well.

High Reaches. It was a Weyr he'd never been to, having spent his whole life in Igen Weyr, and one he was excited to see. One that, judging by everyone's wardrobes, was going to be freezing. In this heat, he was a-okay with that notion. He would take snow over layers in a hot desert any day.

This will be something new for the both of us, Eluth told his rider, mirroring the young man's own thoughts as he climbed onto the dragon and started strapping himself in. There was a tiny part of him that was paranoid; going between was anxiety inducing, and he hoped it got easier the more he did it. But that small part of him was tiny indeed compared to how excited he was.

And then their straps had been double checked, they'd been given their destination's image, gone over it, and Tess had given the signal and they were off. The cold of between froze him immediately, and he felt the panic well into his gut, but just as it started to get overwhelming, they were out into the open sky once more. Below them lay their destination, the one they had pictured and he marveled over how perfectly they had imagined it. It awed him every time they betweened.

He punched the air in triumph and laughed loudly in excitement. They'd done it! Go ahead and land. See if you can't get close to L'nal and Fl'et, eh? He told Eluth, hoping to be able to spend some time with the other two Weyrlings in his class that he felt the most comfortable with.

Ziketh, Bismuth. Keltin would like for us to land close together so that our riders may spend some time together. His voice still sounded composed and dependable, but if one listened closely, they could hear the tiniest tinge of excitement as he stared at the snow beneath them.

What did she need to wear so many layers for? It was a question that buzzed around Arnessa's head and Argentuth's too as she got ready, and then as they flew up to the weyrbowl. Once Tess explained, however, Nessa beamed brightly. Ohh, we're going to see snow!

Snow? Argentuth echoed, his eyes whirling curiously as he picked through his rider's memories for what snow was like. It took him but a moment of seeing swaths of it glittering gently in the sunlight to decide that he liked it a great deal, and his pleasure at the prospect of getting to see it for himself washed over his rider.

I'm excited too, Arnessa confided in her dragon as she carefully climbed atop his neck once Tess gave them the order to do so, and then checked her riding straps even more carefully.

In no time at all everyone was ready, Tess gave the signal, and Argentuth leapt into the air and winked between. A few breaths later he and Arnessa emerged over the snow-covered mountains, taking in the morning sun as it sparkled across the blankets of snow.

Isn't it beautiful? Nessa asked her dragon as she gazed down at the snowy landscape far below them. It hadn't been too long since she'd last seen snow - had it really been almost two turns by now? - but it was still just as lovely as she remembered.

Argentuth's faceted eyes glittered sky blue as he took his time surveying the picturesque landscape too, doing his best to etch it into his memory, and rumbled his agreement. It's beautiful, even if it is cold. We should come here more often.

Dressed warmly? What did that mean? Renezi had only ever lived in the humid jungle before coming to the hot deserts surrounding Sirocco, and as such all of his clothing was thin and breezy, made for higher temperatures. But between was cold, much colder than he'd ever felt before, so perhaps they were going to go between frequently today? In either case he'd done his best to wear as much as he could - it felt awkward as fek to be honest - but either way he'd made an attempt at dressing warmly.

They were heading to High Reaches, up in the north -- that was why they had to dress warmly. How--

How cold will it be? Aktinoth's voice buzzed through his head, her mind zooming around his, as energetic as ever in her excitement. How long will we be there for? When can we go? Will it be fun? I bet it'll be fun! Ohh I can't wait to have fun!

Fun as it'll probably be it's still a lesson, love, Ren reminded her and, on Tess's signal, climbed atop the green's neck and checked his straps. And we'll leave as soon as everyone's ready! Hopefully they'd be ready soon, he was excited to go see this place for himself! Hopefully it wouldn't be too cold.

Then came the signal; Aktinoth trumpeted gleefully as she jumped into the air and followed her classmates between for the few seconds it took to arrive at High Reaches. And…

Holy fek it's cold.

It is! But look how pretty it is! Ohh, look at all the white stuff! What is it? What's it called? Torith! Aktinoth bugled as she addressed her friend and looked towards the brown and Khini. Even though Ren had probably learned what it was during various geography lessons, she wanted to ask her friend. Surely he'd be as excited as she! What is this white stuff called, Torith? Does Khini remember it? Did she ever see it when she was a hatchling?

Renezi patted his dragon's neck as he laughed aloud, and then marveled at seeing his own breath in the air. It was cold, but it was pretty! I might have t'try and paint this later, he told Aktinoth privately as he glanced around keenly, trying to drink in the entire landscape at once. So this was the north!

You aren't happy. Isaroth observed. He could feel A'lek beside him - nerves jangled through her, despite his reassuring presence. She also looked distinctly uncomfortable in all her gear. Well, that and utterly ridiculous. He blew hot air on her, rumbling in laughter as she shoved him forcibly away.

"It's hot enough without you blowing dragon breath all over me." She commented, laughing lightly. It didn't do much for her nerves, but she felt herself relax just a bit. I hate the cold. A'lek told the brown privately. Snow was dangerous and wet and sure it could be fun, but she'd much rather be inside and away from it. There was a reason she was more than okay with living in a desert.

Isaroth just eyed his rider, nuzzling his face against her for a moment. The nerves were still there, mixed with the sheer heat of the day, and standing in all her cold weather gear. She was nervous about travelling so far, but it was needed.

And cold or not, High Reaches was what they had decided on, and so High Reaches was where they would go. Climbing on Isaroth, both ensured they had the image firmly in their mind before taking off, and then again before disappearing between.

A'lek carefully counted down the seconds while they were in the midst of the nothingness of between and felt her breaths speed. Too long. This felt too long. No, this wasn't right.

Calm yourself. Isaroth's mind became firm, filling all the cracks and breaking the doubts like dust.

And just like that, the light was reflecting off the snow of High Reaches. A'lek sunk in her straps, relief flooding her. They were half a moment after the others in the class, and she could feel herself shaking - a mixture of relief, nerves, and cold. Pay attention. Isaroth's mind pressed firmly against hers. Trust in us. We did well. And now we must survey.

Right. Got it. She leaned low against Isaroth and they banked around the area. Isaroth kept them in the air just a bit longer, allowing A'lek to feel the crisp, fresh air, allowing her nerves to calm further. Finally, the pair went to land.

Kel couldn't help the tendril of excitement rising up inside him as Tess told them where they were going. The High Reaches weren't Telgar, but he would be in the mountains again. Mountains which weren't the sandy desert-brown that seemed to encompass Sirocco during the dry season.

Arumth nuzzled Margoth affectionately and then tilted her head to regard Kel. She only knew Telgar from Kel's memories, but she could feel his longing to visit, and how he was looking forward to seeing High Reaches.
Someday, we'll go to Telgar together,
she whispered to him.
We'll visit your sisters.

Kel grinned. Soon.

But for now, he was ready to go to High Reaches. He waited for the signal, and kept the image clear in his mind and--

First, there was nothing, except for Arumth's mind pressed against his, and then they were out above the snowy mountains.

The cold air was invigorating, and Arumth bugled with delight at the sight of the sun glinting on the fallen snow.
Oh, it is even better than your memories!
she cried, circling over the clearing.
But it is cold and wet, you say? Well, I'll find out for myself now!
Kel had often dreamed of snow, on the hottest days in the desert.

Eventually, Kel directed her to land, which she did, setting herself down beside Margoth. She turned to nudge the bronze again.
Look, the sun glimmers on the snow the same as it does upon our hides.

'Dress warmly' Tess had said, what the fek were they going to be doing that called for that? He had a funny feeling that he could make a guess given what they'd been practising the last month but he wasn't the sort to jump to conclusions and so he stood listening quietly as the weyrlingmaster outlined the plan for the day.

Yep, they were going north.

Ohh, nice! Will there be snow? Ladijath chirped and gave her rider a nudge, her eyes whirling with excited blues and greens.

Red shrugged - how should he know? - but seeing Jassara miming throwing something made him think that the answer was probably yes. While he wasn't fond of the idea of somewhere that cold that water just went and froze all over the place he was excited to see the continent Jassara hailed from, and seeing her grin didn't hurt either. Perhaps this would be fun. Red smiled briefly, slapped Ladijath companionably on the shoulder, and vaulted onto her back. Let's go find out.

He was used to between by now, as much as you could be he reckoned, and he was used to coming out into cool air quite high up. He wasn't used to coming out into cold air. He also wasn't used to the landscape below being white. As instructed Ladijath glided around to let Red take a good look, silent for once as she too took in the unfamiliar sights.

This silence however did not last long; Ladijath dived abruptly with a trill of delight. Come on then, let's go see what it feels like!

The small green levelled out her course a little way above the ground and skimmed over it, delighting in how the powdery snow was stirred up by her passage. At last she landed close to Arumth and Margoth, and called up to Argentuth in the sky. Come down Argentuth! It's fluffy! The stuff around her feet was anyway, the stuff underneath had been flattened.

Despite his warm gear Red could still feel the chill seeping in and he shivered slightly as he looked over at Jass; they were in public so he didn't let too much show on his face but she would probably be able to pick up on his sense of bewilderment. "So. Snow." It was a thing. A cold thing.

It's cold. And wet. And squishy. Margoth's rather analytical analysis of snow made Jassara laugh and lean forward so she could wrap her arms around her dragon's neck. Well, wrap them around as far as they would go, which wasn't all that far anymore. The gesture gave her the perfect excuse to stay mounted for a few more seconds. She'd never tell anyone, except maybe Red, but flying between was still something that bothered her. Jass had worried about it before they'd begun learning and though she no longer worried about it, she hadn't grown used to it either.

Finally though she unbuckled her flight straps and slid down off Margoth's back, immediately leaning forward to grab handfuls of the cold, powdery snow. "Snow," she said, grinning brilliantly at Red. Her cheeks and the tip of her nose were already turning pink from the bite in the air but she was beyond caring about it. She caught that slight look of bewilderment on Red's face and her smile warmed. "It's a lot like sand, but colder and much better!"

She hadn't realized quite how much she'd missed home until she was there again. Sirocco was home now, of course, and she loved it dearly, but something as simple as being in a place with snow had lifted her heart in a way she hadn't known she'd needed. "Give yourself a little bit of time, you'll get used to the cold. I can't say you'll get used to the glare bouncing off the snow, but - "

Instead of finishing her sentence she lobbed the snowball she'd made as she'd talked directly at Red before laughing maniacally and skittering away from him. "Catch me if you can!" she challenged, grabbing up more snow as she went. "Hey - think fast, Kel!" she yelled, chucking another hastily made snowball at the gold weyrling as she shot on by.

What better way to learn the terrain than to run all over it so you could find the best spot to defend from a snowball fight?

Margoth rumbled softly and nuzzled Arumth affectionately. My hide doesn't shine as brightly as yours does, he told her. Arumth and the snow combined were nearly blinding, but he didn't mind it at all. Both were made even more beautiful by that brightness. If we are to explore on foot... The bronze trailed off, amusement warming his icy voice a bit as he stuck his muzzle into the snow and began pushing it around.

Khini shivered a little with cold and a little with delight, and Torith of course bugled his own enthusiasm as he gazed around at the wondrous new place they found themselves in.

I like this very well! he told every dragon in the class with a great rumbling and crashing of excitement. Yes this is snow! he confinued confidently to Aktinoth, swooping a bit closer to the green so that Khini could grin and wave at Renezi. She remembers well, snow can be hard to travel in but it is good to play in!

After her wave at Ren Khini leaned forward over Torith's neck and urged him into a drive; yes, it had been good to play in. The grown-ups hadn't been all that keen, though they'd humoured her and the other kids a bit, but they'd left for the south before she'd grown out of loving it herself! She'd bring Salini and Kalin as soon as she was allowed, the others too, but for now she just wanted to experience it for herself again and to share it with Ren and with their dragons.

The excitable green trumpeted again as she abruptly dove down towards the ground. They could look more later! Let's go see what it's like for ourselves!

Renezi barely had time to return Khini's wave before Aktinoth was suddenly plummeting towards the ground, so with a grin he held on and leaned forward. This was cold but it was beautiful, and going somewhere new was wonderful and--

Puffy clouds of tiny flakes whipped up beneath Aktinoth's wings as she swooped down over the thick blanket of snow, and both Ren and his green watched it in wonder for a moment or two before landing. Aktinoth trilled gleefully and pranced around a bit. This is cold! She announced brightly as she spun in a circle. Cold and fluffy and soft and cold! Without missing a beat she stopped her circling and shoved her nose into the snow and promptly sneezed, sending up even more puffs of snow.

With a grin Ren unbuckled himself from his riding straps and hopped down from Aktinoth's neck onto the ground --

And promptly slipped in the trodden snow and fell over backwards with a muffled whump.

Miora had been ready for this for a long time. They'd been flying between for a bit now, but an actual trip a good distance away... she was terrified and excited all at the same time. And snow! She could look forward to weather that wasn't stifling hot! The three layers she was wearing didn't help any, but that didn't matter much to her. In no time, they would be in the cold, and most importantly, snow!

When it was time to mount up, she nearly flew herself, climbing onto Lith's back and strapping herself in. She knew that part of her excitement for the success of this trip was because that was one step closer to being able to fly on her own. And flying on her own meant only one thing, outside of fighting thread. It will be nice to meet your mother, the blue told her gently, reading her thoughts. She hoped he was right. She desperately wanted to see her mother, but she didn't know if her mother wanted to see her.

She didn't have much time to focus on thoughts of her mother, however. Soon enough, they had their destination in mind and with it double checked, along with their straps, on Tess's mark, they were off! They were in the air and then they were between! For one... two... three...

And then they were hovering over the snow covered scenery of High Reaches. It was beautiful, and she could feel Lith's agreement. They took the time to take it all in before landing. Very carefully, they landed.

It's so soft! Lith exclaimed as Miora slid from his back. Once she was off, he gave a little pounce into a drift. He bugled happily and rolled, causing the girl to laugh. She scooped up a handful and tossed it at him, hitting him in the neck. He trilled and wiggled in the snow, almost as if making a dragon snow angel.

Oh, murmured Cronsth as the circled downward. I did not know snow was like this.

Me either, Raelyn said with wide eyes. Hurry, let's land. They had gotten a good look at it from above, and now she wanted to see it up close.

It's cold! Cronsth said with some dismay when her feet touched down. And wet! Raelyn, I don't know if I like this.

Raelyn laughed, delighted, as she slid down from Cronsth's back. It's so pretty though! Cold, but pretty. Raelyn wasn't used to cold like this; even between took only a few seconds.

Cronsth caught sight of Lith, pouncing into the drifts of snow and watched him with wide eyes. Oh, Lith, she said, a little shyly. Your hide matches the snow very well.

Raelyn grinned a little, and nodded toward Miora. "He seems to be enjoying himself so much," she said of Lith. If only Cronsth had the courage to join him!

When Kel and slid down Arumth's shoulders and into the snow, he took some time to look around, up at the white-peaked mountains. His breath clouded the air, and the knitted scarf his mother had made for him was wrapped securely around his neck. It was invigorating to be in the cold again, and Kel realized that he missed the snow.

Of course, that meant he wasn't paying attention to Jassara till he heard her laughing voice. He dove out of the way as best he could, only--

Her snowball wound up hitting Arumth instead. She yelped in surprise, momentarily distracted from Margoth's affectionate nuzzling.
Very cold
But there was amusement in her voice, too, and she eyed Jassara speculatively.

I do hope your Jass doesn't mind,
Arumth said to Margoth, giving him a nudge. She was feeling mischievous when she turned and swept her tail through the snow, sending a shower of it flying in Jassara's direction.

It was okay to be a little undignified today. There was no one around but her clutchmates, no one expecting her to lead anyone at all. And she thought Jassara's games were entertaining.

Beside her Kel sputtered. Jassara's snowball had missed him, but he'd accidentally got caught in Arumth's wave. She turned him and snorted.
You need to be better at dodging!

Isaroth landed a few moments after the majority of his siblings, going to land near Margoth and Arumth, already seeing them playing in the snow. What are you planning? A'lek asked, wary as she felt his mind. In response, all she got back was mental laughter, dark and smoky. The brown was not generally the playful type.

Landing hard, Isaroth sent snow flying into the air, joining in with Arumth's wave of snow. Except, of course, this one could easily hit the gold too. Whoops. His tone wasn't apologetic at all. Instead, Isaroth looked rather proud of himself for the sheer amount of snow he sent flying.

Even if it did coat A'lek and him - causing him to shake off, and send even more snow flying. And if he had dipped his wings in the snow on the ground to send more into the air, well... whoops?

This isn't so bad. Isaroth told his rider, pressing his head against her as she climbed down - finally able to. A'lek just shook her head, amused.

"A lot like sand, but not?" Red asked, one corner of his mouth turning upward almost imperceptibly as he freed himself from the straps and swung his leg over Ladijath's shoulders; he could still dismount her like people did tall runners and probably always would be able to. Just as his feet hit the ground and he turned to Jassara her snowball hit him in the shoulder, which made him startle back slightly so that he bumped into his dragon. Before he could recover himself enough to retaliate Arumth did so with great style; Red huffed his amusement and Ladijath bugled delightedly.

Let's make teams and snow fight! she called to her classmates, ducking neatly out of the way as Isaroth sent a wave of snow at Arumth and then swishing her tail in a drift to send one back at him. Or we could have a free for all! she suggested with equal glee.

As Ladijath leaped into the fray Red hung back quietly, he'd just seen Renezi fall on his ass and he had no desire to share that fate. He knew Jass would want to play and part of him like that idea but another part called him to be reserved around the rest of the class, save Nessa of course. The second instinct was winning at least for now; as the snow fight started Red brushed the snow off his shoulder and turned to study the landscape, he'd never seen terrain quite like this before and this was supposed to be a lesson not just a fun jaunt.

Khini couldn't help laughing when Ren fell but she slid quickly from Torith's back so that she could jog over and offer him a hand up. "I didn't realise y'were this keen to greet the soil of the north!" she beamed, and then promptly spluttered as a wave of snow caught her in the face. She wasn't sure which dragon had aimed it and she didn't really care, it was Ladijath who got her snowball in retaliation. "Come on Ren, help me out!" she insisted, nudging her friend hard and then gesturing sharply at H'ren - he wasn't even paying attention!

Torith didn't speak to his classmates but he did share with them a feeling of challenge and excitement, though there was a sharper edge to the thought he sent to Ladijath and to Argentuth. With his challenge issued he started trying to scrabble together a snowball like the humans were; in his mind he saw himself setting it rolling and causing chaos!

Ah, shards, she hadn't meant to hit Arumth! "Sorry Arumth!" Jass called, laughing and waving.

She won't mind. She wants us to play, Margoth said, returning Arumth's nudge.

A feeling of deep amusement from Margoth was the first warning she had that something was up. Jass noticed Arumth's tail moving in time to yelp and crouch down, throwing her hands up over her head to keep from getting a face-full of snow. She popped up, laughing, and shook what seemed to be an entire mountain's worth of snow from her shoulders.

"That's the spirit!" she said happily, scooping up another snowball and throwing it at A'lek. No way was her friend going to get to sit there, untouched, looking amused. Nope.

So childish, Margoth said, the stars of his mind sparkling with love and taking the edge off his sardonic tone.

Always, dearheart, she shot back, pausing to look at what her bronze was doing. The way he was mounding up the snow looked purposeful, especially when he reached out a large paw and gently tried to pat it into place.

Figuring it was best to leave him to it she strolled past him, scooping up more snow as she walked. Renezi and Khini were two classmates that she hadn't really gotten to know, but there was no way they would get left to their own devices! The snowball in her hands was tossed easily at Khini, and instead of sticking around the scene of the crime she walked right up to Red, her eyes glowing merrily.

"Come play with me?" she asked, holding her hand out to him and wiggling her fingers. She knew very well that he preferred to look stoic and unmovable around people he didn't know very well, but they were in the North! With snow! There was no way she was going to let him get away with that sort of thing. Once Nessa had safely dismounted she'd pull her friend into the fray as well!

Lesson or not this was also a field trip - the way that Tess was letting them behave without calling them to order proved it - and she planned to take full advantage of it. So much about learning to be a dragonrider was terrifying or insanely serious. You had to grab the fun parts when they came at you, and she planned to do that - and planned to make sure Red and Nessa and Kel and A'lek and the rest of them did the same!

A year later, and Amaata was more comfortable but she still sometimes felt like an outsider. At least she felt something of a connection to her weyrling class, but she was always going to be a little shy, a little distant, but she didn't think anyone hated her.

At least now Kuroth was finally taller than she was if he held his head up properly. He had a tendency to slink.

It's not my fault that I've gotten too big for most of the shadows. The comment was met with an affectionate scratch behind the distinctive pale marking under Kuroth's eye.

She had long since gotten used to the pressure of her bondmate's voice, as well as the rifling sensation as he helped himself to an image of himself, small enough to hug the walls and hide in shadows. He was not nearly as pleased with his increased size as Amaata was.

The blue weyrling had taken the advice to dress warmly to heart, watching what the others put on and dressing accordingly. The Between lesson was something she looked forward to and Amaata listened carefully and made sure she and Kuroth had the image of where they were going perfectly before the group left for High Reaches.

And snow, so much snow. Amaata gasped at the sight, and she could feel Kuroth's disapproval. It's all so white. Kuroth preferred concealment, and there was none to be had here.

Hush, love, Amaata soothed, reaching down to pat the compact, babyish-shaped dragon on his shoulder. they surveyed from the air, and were among the last to land to explore afoot.

Why do they want to throw this around? It's so cold and wet. He vocalized softly, mildly distressed as snow came flying at him and caught him in the face. He shook his head, his dignity affronted, and Amaata turned scratch under his eye marks. "It's supposed to be fun."

Miora giggled lightly at Lith, then turned her attention to Raelyn. "He does," she told the other girl softly. She had gotten used to most of the other Weyrlings in her class, so she wasn't as shy speaking to her. Not like she used to be, at least. It had definitely helped that Raelyn had approached her first.

Lith crooned at Cronsth while he rolled about, and when he got to his feet, he pranced over to his green sister and when he was about to encourage her to romp around with him, they were showered with snow from their other clutch siblings. He bugled loudly, and wiggled much like a feline.

Cronsth! We should attack them with snow too! Ours can help us! Miora giggled again at her dragon's excitement. To Raelyn, she said simply, "I'm not quite certain that this is what Master Tess had in mind."

It was hard to refuse Jass when she smiled at him like that, very hard indeed. After a few moments Red relented not with a smile but at least with a slight softening of his gaze. "A'right, who're we picking on then?" It looked like Jass was just flinging at anyone and everyone, perhaps that was the thing to do? Red stooped and started to pat together a ball of snow, trusting Amber and Jade to let him know if anyone was about to hurl a missile at him.

Ladijath chirped and bounded away a little to gather up more snow, which this time she launched at Margoth. Here's some more snow for you to use Margoth! she crowed everso helpfully.

--I'm always right,-- Havith jested gently to her rider as they circled up above the developing snowball fight.

So, High Reaches was over in that direction and somewhat south of there the hold Samil had moved to when he married. Satisfied with their bearings the pair turned their eyes down onto their classmates, R'hael started to smile.

**Would anyone like a tactical overview of the battle?** Havith asked *the whole class* with some amusement.

It hadn't been difficult to imagine what they were doing, and Fl'et found herself somewhat distant from the excitement that seemed to be rolling through her classmates. Ziketh was steady, and though Fl'et was nervous to be returning to the North via between on her own dragon, she was careful to imagine the image from Clarith and Tess clearly. When they appeared above the snowy mountain range she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding in.

Eluth says we should land close together. Ziketh told Fl'et in her cool steady voice, and though she was not excited at the prospect of landing in the snow, she gave her dragon the appropriate mental nudge in agreement.

You could be excited. Eluth is. Ziketh said to Fl'et as she landed neatly next to Eluth, her wide wings kicking up some snow as she did so. Fl'et was grateful for her scarf as the fluffy stuff spun around them and she looked over to see what the others were doing and her jaw dropped beneath her scarf.

"They're playing!" she said aloud to Ziketh and Keltin, surprise. They had barely viewed the mountains. How could they memorize or sketch the stretch of mountains while they were all throwing snow at one another? Fl'et clung to Ziketh as the waves of snow scattered into dust around them from the antics of the other dragons. Fl'et felt as affronted as Kuroth looked!

Jassara's smile got impossibly brighter when Red's gaze softened, a sure sign that she had won him over to her cause. As he stooped over to make a snowball she leaned in and pressed a quick, discreet kiss to his cheek. "Hmmm...let's see..." she mused, tapping her chin as she looked around at all of their classmates. Her eyes caught on Fl'et, who appeared to be clinging to Ziketh rather diligently.

"I think Fl'et needs to have a little bit of fun," she told Red, her grin going mischievous as she gathered up some more snow. After she was satisfied with the snowball she'd made she slipped her free hand into one of Red's and gently tugged him over to the other greenrider.

"How's it, Fl'et?" Jass chirped. Her cheeks and nose were red with the cold, and her eyes twinkled merrily up at the girl she considered a friend. "Why don't you come down and hang out with us for a bit?"

She held the snowball out, wiggling her hand enticingly. "You could help us get K'nel and A'lek back for what Arumth and Isaroth did!"

Margoth froze as a wave of snow crashed over him. Ladijath's comment told him exactly who was responsible, though the bronze took a second to determine what he wanted to do about it. In the end he snapped his wings out smartly, sending some of the snow right back at the green. That's so kind of you, he replied, his tone as cold as the snow around them.

It appears as though Torith is attempting to roll a snowball at everyone else. Perhaps he needs more snow too? Redirecting the energy of Jassara had been something the bronze had gotten rather good at - perhaps the same trick would work on Ladijath?

The bronze swung his head around and nudged Arumth gently, silently apologizing for any snow he'd flung at her when he'd opened his wings.

Kuroth was not amused by the whole snowball fight, and Amaata kept off to one side (not an uncommon occurrence for her) and stroked the dragon's nose. She wasn't planning on getting involved, but ...

She shouldn't be lonely, not with Kuroth, but she so often was.

With a nudge from her blue, Amaata stepped a little away from her dragon and scooped up a double handful of snow, packing it into a ball. Picking someone who was obviously part of the battle, Amaata lobbed her snowy missile at Red and hoped she hadn't overstepped.

Cronsth tilted her head and peered at Lith. Who should we send the snow to first? she asked, only a hint of hesitation in her voice. She desperately wanted to join in on the fun--and here Lith was, inviting her!--but she did not wish to get in trouble, either.

Raelyn sent her a mental nudge, urging her on. She wouldn't get in trouble if everyone else was playing too! That gave Cronsth the courage to add, Perhaps we could sneak up on them, when they're too distracted to notice us.

That made Raelyn grin a little, and she turned back to Miora with a giggle. "No, I don't think that she had this in mind at all," she agreed. "But it's the first time any of them are seeing snow! What else could anyone expect?" Her voice was eager, even as she lowered it playfully. "It's my first time seeing snow too."
